In silence, Gwen Silent preserves the balance between two opposing forces that complete each other. True harmony is born from the awareness of contradictions peacefully coexisting within ourselves.

𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙎𝙄𝙇𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙉𝙊𝙏𝙀𝙎 (2025)
𝗢𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱

Recent news of forest fires in Indonesia & the haze crossing national borders brought me back to a painting I made last year, The Silent Notes.

I found myself looking at it again. For quite some time. Something felt strangely unsettling. Not because the painting depicted what is happening today, but because its atmosphere seemed so close to the reality unfolding before us. When I painted it, I was contemplating human existence within the vastness of the cosmos. How small we are, and how fragile our world can be. Through @gwensilent, a figure without a mouth, holding the Earth in her hands, I tried to express something beyond words.

The painting was originally about silent musical notes, memories, emotions, & unspoken thoughts. A certain restlessness beneath the silence. Something stirring, even when everything appeared still.

I am reminded of Carl Jung's idea that not everything emerging from within us is fully conscious. Perhaps artistic intuition sometimes gives form to things we have yet to understand.

Can artists sense something before they truly understand what they have sensed?

I don't know...

I would never call it a prophecy. Nor would I ever wish for something terrible to happen. Quite the opposite. Perhaps a painting is never truly finished when the artist puts down the brush. Time passes, events unfold, and old works return to us with meanings we never anticipated.

I look at Gwen Silent again. She remains still, holding her little world. Nothing in the painting has changed.
Perhaps only the way I see it has. And amid everything happening today, I hold on to one simple hope.
May our Earth be well. 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴.

Small, isn't it? 😊
Measuring just 30 × 20 cm, this is quite a tiny canvas painting. Yet, it has always been one of my personal favorites. I painted 𝘌𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 during the Covid-19 pandemic, a time when so many thoughts, emotions, & feelings were stirring within me. Somehow, I poured much of what I was experiencing into this little painting. Despite its size, 𝘌𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 has had a rather special journey. In 2021, it was selected through a curatorial process for the 11𝙩𝙝 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙀𝙭𝙝𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙨 at the Shanghai Art Collection Museum, China.

And now, 𝘌𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 has found a new place to stay. You can see it at VIA Social Bistro, thanks to a lovely collaboration between @meiro.gallery and @via.social_

I've always loved how an artwork takes on a life of its own, moving from one space to another, meeting new people, and perhaps finding new meanings through the eyes of those who encounter it. A little painting, carrying memories & a journey much bigger than its size. ❤️

Painting • Acrylic on canvas
100x70 cm
2024

@gwensilent sits with her eyes closed. Not to escape the world, but to enter the quietest place within herself, where words are no longer needed and prayer finds its own language. Before her, a candle burns. Small, steady, yet unwilling to surrender to the darkness.

𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘦 reflects on prayer as a quiet source of strength. Prayer may not immediately change our circumstances, but it can slowly change the way we face them. From prayer grows faith, from faith comes clarity, and from clarity, the courage to carry on.

Hope does not always emerge from brighter days. Sometimes, it is through our darkest experiences that we learn to protect the fragile flame within. And as long as that flame remains alive, darkness will never have the final word.
