A surreal and beautiful way to start my sabbatical with my copy of @wayfjournal in the mail (all the way from Germany!). My short story a “A Hammam in Sousse” is in this issue and I’m excited for you to read it. Order your copy!

Thank you to @ambatakazi who asked me all the right questions in the editing process. Thank you to all the editors and founders at @wayfjournal for making space for these stories. Beautiful art by @ik_nnadiarts and @angeli__patel

(Also I haven’t filmed/edited video in a long time so please forgive the jump cuts etc. I’m just very excited!!)

Many years ago, in an art history course, I came across an orientalist painting of a “Turkish bath.” The painting told me more of the disturbing fantasies of the Western European male painters, who were (rightfully) barred from such spaces reserved for local women and girls. These images bothered me, not just from an academic perspective (eventually, my research focused on the orientalist gaze and colonial culture obsessed with “unveiling”) but also from an artistic perspective.

With this story, I wanted to remove the hammam from this highly eroticized and timeless past that was conjured for male voyeurs to justify and even ‘purify’ violent colonial acts. I wanted instead to write about the hammam where my grandmother and mother brought me, the hammam that cleanses the soul, the hammam that transform the feminine body.

Dear Readers,
August is already soon upon us. Sharing 5 reasons to soak up the rest of Berlin summer with us here at Chapters.

Another month of book launch events, author conversations, book club, and more. Take a look, come discover an event which peaks your curiosity. Here’s what’s on the program next month.

August 10th: Romantic and Ruinous Book Club

Our August read is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. A novel about desire and reinvention, about who gets to belong and who pays the price for believing they can. Short enough to read in a sitting, rich enough to argue about for hours.

August 12th: Hustle & Haunting

Double Book Launch: Diamond Life and The Decadence. We are thrilled to host a joint celebration for two of the sharpest new voices in British fiction, Anna Maconochie and Leon Craig, as they bring their latest books to Moabit.

August 13th: Roots & Reinvention

We are honoured to welcome National Book Award finalist Angela Flournoy to Chapters for an evening exploring her writing life, from her celebrated debut The Turner House to her much-anticipated second novel, The Wilderness.

August 20th: Voice & Visibility

Book launch: The Othered Woman: How White Feminism Harms Muslim Women by Shahed Ezaydi. Shahed Ezaydi in conversation with Sofio Rukhadze In partnership with Feminist Fiction Berlin.

August 27th: Magazine Launch: WAYF Journal

WAYF, short for Where Are You From, takes a question that lands differently depending on who is asking it and who is answering, and turns it into a literary journal.
