New medical treatments cannot improve health outcomes for everyone if clinical trials do not reflect the people most affected by a disease.

Clinical trials help doctors determine whether new treatments are safe and effective.

For example:

• Black men are 70% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from it, yet they account for less than 13% of participants in prostate cancer clinical trials.

• Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, yet women make up less than half of participants in heart disease clinical trials.

Scientific research is not one-size-fits-all. The broader population must be represented.

Here's what we know about representation in clinical trials:
- If clinical trials don't represent everyone, serious side effects may go unnoticed until after approval.
- People respond differently to medications. Without diverse trials, doctors may not know if a treatment works for all.
- Language, culture, travel, and awareness barriers can make joining trials harder.
- When clinical trials include people from a wide range of backgrounds, research becomes stronger, and care is more likely to improve for all.

This week the burn center said a heartfelt goodbye to Dr. Shannon Caesar-Peterson, and phew we miss her already! Dr. Caesar-Peterson has been an incredibly strong advocate for not only her patients but also our entire multi-disciplinary team for the last three years (helllloooo remember when she won the 2024 Dept of Nursing Physician of the Year award….and as a fellow???). All of the staff here at the burn center (and the @nyp_sicu) wish her the very very best of luck with all her future endeavors!

Brb gotta go finishing crying 😭😭😭

What an honor to be invited to share my path in medicine in surgery with students spending the summer in the BLOSSOM program through the Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine.

🤩 Sharing the “stage” with my colleague Dr. Evelyn Cantillo was so inspiring. I loved hearing about her path and inspiration in Women’s Health.

✨ I hope that sharing our experience including successes and challenges can help these bright students in their own journey.

🙃 I always feel reenergized spending time with the next generation of physicians & healthcare leaders.

🙏🏼 Thank you for the opportunity 🙏🏼

🏀 KNICKS IN FIVE. A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT TAKES ONE. ❤️
As New York rallies behind the Knicks, we're reminded that some victories happen off the court.
It only takes one living donor to change a life forever.
One conversation.
One selfless act.
One second chance.
At Weill Cornell Kidney Transplant we're committed to helping patients explore every path to transplant, including living donation, paired exchange, and donor champion programs.
