Michael Lucio Sternbach kindly posted a clip from this special project he helped to create a few years ago.
It’s a lovely reminder of why, we as creatives do what we do…Inspiration, creation, connection and collaboration. Here’s to more of this in 2026.

🎥 In honor of Mike McLaughlin’s “Lightning in a Bottle: A Love Letter to Asbury Lanes” photography book, release, I’ve dusted off a portion of a profile piece that I co-directed w/ my dear friend @wdevizia & was produced by @workhouse_pr a few years back. The original Asbury Lanes was a magical place—an embodiment of punk rock’s DIY ethos, where community, collaboration, inclusion, & every kind of joyful noise were celebrated. We all miss it madly...

“For over a decade, photographer Mike McLaughlin served as the unofficial “keeper of the Asbury Lanes’ memories,” instinctively documenting the music, the misfits, the staff, the artists, & the rare magic that lived inside the Lanes’ walls. His camera became an extension of him, allowing him to preserve a community & a creative universe that no longer exists. @mikemclaughlinphotography offers a visual archive of a beloved cultural landmark — a collective fever dream shared by those who called the Lanes home.”

🎥 One more post in celebration of Mike McLaughlin’s new photo book, “Lightning in a Bottle: A Love Letter to Asbury Lanes”: lest we forget the original Asbury Lanes visionary who set the whole damn thing ablaze — Meldon Van Riper Stultz III.

Fueled with a reckless love for art, music, & community, @yeoleghost turned a bowling alley into a cultural spark plug that changed Asbury Park forever. Another reminder of a time when Asbury’s revival was driven by art & risk, not real estate...

On a personal note, I’ll always treasure those early days when Mel let me book a screening of the Minutemen doc, followed by an army of local bands tearing through covers by the infamous San Pedro trio. It was also the first time I ever played live — a moment that quietly set the course for a lifetime of music. One hell of a night & one hell of an era. We all “jammed econo”, for sure. 🎸🎳⚡️

🦎 For many years, the name Tim Cronin existed solely as suburban stoner lore for me & my friends. During one of our early “vision quests” in my friend Egon’s backyard, his older brother wandered into our sacred space & insisted we listen to Monster Magnet’s “Spine of God” in its entirety. Given our state of mind, we happily submitted & from the first notes, we were hooked. The record became our soundtrack to cosmic exploration, saturated with the themes a young outsider teen could only dream of: sex, drugs, science fiction, & revolution.

A few days later, I picked up my own hard copy. Beyond the surreal sounds, what made it even cooler was that this record had been made by people from our town—local heshers who surely walked among us. Naturally, I became obsessed, pouring over the liner notes & artwork in search of meaning. Everything was kind of vague & weird, but one credit really jumped out: Tim Cronin – Dope – Lights – Center of the Universe.

In the early ‘90s, Red Bank was a very different place & information was beautifully scarce. Rumors swirled in our friend group: Tim was an acid casualty roaming around Red Bank in an army coat. He was Monster Magnet’s original singer but had fried his brain on whippets & slipped into a Syd Barrett haze. He was half man, half lizard. A Boo Radley recluse living in the basement of Jack’s Music Shoppe. In short, a myth was born among us—a shared magical myth I’ve never fully let go of.

Nearly a decade later, I finally met Tim. Turns out, he was the nice guy behind the counter at Jack’s, the one who’d been fueling our musical obsessions for years. Over the last 25 years, we managed to create some real memories together. Looking back, every memory of Tim is a damn good one—filled with laughter, joy, & raucous Ribeye nights laced with just the right amount of mayhem.

So, in the end, most of our old myths about Tim proved to just be stories. But the truth? The truth was even better. So instead of mourning his passing, I choose to believe he’s simply transitioned—back to half man, half lizard—holed up in the basement of Jack’s, spinning Roky Erickson records, waiting for us to join him one day. 🖤
