Money skills start early.

The Forigin Initiative is proud to work with BMEA ( @thebmeaschool )for financial literacy enrichment this school year. In this clip, students are tackling real questions about credit, assets, and liabilities, building the foundation they’ll need to make smart financial decisions for life.

We believe financial education should be engaging, so we keep it interactive and fun while making sure the lessons stick. When young people understand how money works, they’re better prepared to build wealth and opportunity for themselves and their communities.

Mentoring Tuesdays at BMEA Independent School

Our young men gather weekly with their site coordinators for mentoring circles, where hot topics spark real conversation and brotherhood grows. Last week, they sat down for fresh haircuts and left standing a little taller. ✂️

Meanwhile, our young ladies are in the kitchen with Ms. Morgan, mastering everything from cookies to cinnamon rolls. Every batch is a lesson in patience, creativity, and the joy of making something with your own hands. 🧁

At BMEA, education reaches beyond academics. We are building scholars inside and out, nurturing identity, confidence, and character so every child can thrive as a whole person.

What if school felt like real life, because it is?

At last week’s parent meeting, we shared how BMEA Independent School is doing school differently. Through Project Based Learning, our scholars meet ELA, math, science, and social studies inside real challenges drawn from their own communities. A budget becomes a lesson in ratios. A neighborhood issue becomes a persuasive essay. A question becomes an investigation.

When the work reflects who they are, scholars see themselves in it, and that recognition is where engagement, identity, and joyful learning take root. This is how we cultivate thinkers who are thriving now and ready to shape what comes next.

Joe Bush is the Chief Director of Youth & Family Engagement at the Boldly Moving Education Ahead, where he focuses on Black male development, mentorship, educational equity, and community engagement. With a background in education and nonprofit leadership, Joe has dedicated his career to empowering young people through mentorship, leadership development, and workforce development.

Through his work with students, families, educators, and community partners, Joe creates opportunities for young people to build leadership skills, achieve academic success, and prepare for their futures. His commitment to youth empowerment and educational equity continues to create meaningful pathways for the next generation of leaders and changemakers.

We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Boldly Moving Education Ahead (BMEA) for the upcoming Generation Wealth Conference!

Dedicated to creating spaces for Black, Brown, and economically underserved students to learn, lead, and thrive, BMEA works to increase diverse representation in education. Through their Youth Leadership Development Program (YLDP) and Metro Detroit Summer Program, they build an intergenerational mentoring and teacher pipeline to develop the next generation of Black male educators while equipping young people with essential leadership skills.

Our partnership with the Generation Wealth Conference stems from a shared commitment to empowering the next generation through financial literacy, mentorship, and career exposure. By connecting students with real-world pathways and representation, we aim to provide young people with the tools and confidence needed to build long-term stability and shape their own futures.

This partnership aims to support spaces that inspire, mentor, and open up possibilities for youth and future educators across our communities.

This summer, we went into classrooms across Detroit and gave youth insight to what financial literacy is and what a strong economic foundation looks like.

Week 1 of Year 2 is here!

Our scholars walked in with bright eyes and even brighter energy and so did we.

A second year means stronger systems, deeper relationships, and a community that’s already showing up in every classroom and morning circle. Our teachers, coordinators, and mentors spent the summer preparing to make this year even better than the last.

At BMEA, learning doesn’t feel like a chore. It feels like discovery. Here’s to another year of joyful learning and moments that matter. Welcome back, scholars!

What the Score Can’t See: Feedback for the Whole Kid

For two decades, K-12 education has been optimizing the wrong outputs.

Aggregate scores can tell us who’s behind. But they can’t tell us why. And they definitely can’t tell a teacher what to do next.

We’re proposing a different measurement stack: qualitative, individualized feedback that reveals what each student is actually thinking. Feedback that connects the classroom with out-of-school-time programs, bringing academic and social-emotional growth into one continuous loop.

And this isn’t just a theory. It’s already happening in Detroit at The BMEA Independent School and the BMEA Youth Leadership Development Program.
