What Are Zines?

A “zine” (pronounced “zeen,” short for magazine) is defined as a hand-made, self-published, photocopied booklet which ranges in various topics and themes. Examples include personal stories, travel, how-to guides, satire, poetry, collaborations, art, fiction and non-fiction. Zines are an off-shoot of DIY culture and took off most notably in the early 1990’s music and punk scene. The art form has continued to flourish for decades as a worldwide microculture.

The @bendzinelibrary was established in 2001 through the collaboration of a few local “zinesters” in an effort to introduce the Central Oregon community to this unique expression of art. The zines contained are from writers and artists all over the USA and abroad. These zines are not for sale but are available for check-out and return based on the honor system. Peruse the collections and you are bound to find something that strikes your interest!

Zine culture is inclusive and recognizes the unique stories of everyone. We refrain from including any material that promotes hate speech.

If you would like to donate or contribute to the Bend Zine Library, please leave your zine and contact info with staff downstairs at @dudleysbookshopbend or contact @bendzinelibrary via direct message on Instagram. Thanks!

It’s so cheesy but really every day I thank the universe for getting to shine in these ways that are meaningful to me like being able to draw and design and grow plants from seed and tromp around in the swamp and care deeply about the place we live. And not to mention getting to do all that with some really special people who are big brained and beautiful. It’s crazy how political it is to care about this world and so many of the people in it, you’d think that would just be a baseline thing. Sucks to have to fight for what feels like breathing, and in some instances is actually literally breathing clean air. So much more to be said that we should talk about in person just cause it’s definitively better. Let’s get back into encyclopedias and asking real people imperfect questions and relishing imperfect answers. I’m going to keep sharing more of everything I’ve been excited about which is actually less tattoos than you’d think. Stick around if you’re into that, if not - nbd. Ok bye, oops wait the whole reason I meant to post this is to show you the new @rotglowfarm catalog I illustrated for and @weareconstance gorgeously printed. Bye for real! Talk soon xo

An (imaginary) inventory of (palimpsest) plants, gardens, and (other related objects) in French Colonial New Orleans

A risograph edition of 150, by artist Ross Louis, designed and printed by Constance in New Orleans, LA.

The work originated as a citywide participatory performance of the investigation into the remnants of New Orleans colonial gardens and has become a guidebook for others to join in the discovery. The book includes an essay, participatory activities, site investigations, a glossary of terms, and a cool fold-out map.

Available at the Print Fetish Newsstand Pop-up at @shopcolorant or you can order it online directly at weareconstance.org #neworleans #rosslouis #garden #frenchcolonial #louisiana #neworleanshistory
