Books can transport us to different places, different countries. But what if you're able to visit two, or multiple countries at once just through sentences in a book?

This is our book recs from our #AmericanPsycho collection for those seeking new places and voices to explore. These countries that you will travel through have carried on their backs burdens from war and disasters caused by the one and only country famous for its Dream/lie of a better life.

Happy Publication Day to @desi_defez whose brilliant book DON’T LEAVE HER ALONE is out today in the UK from @wearefootnote

DON’T LEAVE HER ALONE is published in the US by @putnambooks

When Alba wakes up covered in blood on the floor of a shopping mall, with only fragmented memories of how she got there, she is forced to confront a truth she has long avoided.

Meanwhile, her sister Diana struggles to balance the pressures of motherhood and work, while their mother, Carmen, remains trapped in an endless cycle of sacrifice and duty. As Christmas Eve approaches, what once seemed like ordinary family struggles transforms into a surreal nightmare.

Desirée de Fez's strikingly visceral novel is an incisive exploration of motherhood that interrogates women's struggle for autonomy and identity and ultimately forces the question: what does it take to finally break free?

Book review!

Amma was the debut novel by Saraid de Silva, and was longlisted for the women's prize for fiction in 2025.

Amma follows the journey of three women in one family, Josephine in Singapore in the 50s, where she is left in a room with the father of the boy she is to marry. This event sets her on a course which eventually leads her to the South island of NZ. Her two children (Suri & Sithara) then grapple with their identities which leads to the siblings becoming estranged. We also follow Annie, Sithara's daughter who finds her uncle in London and drops in on his doorstep.

A strong debut with a myriad of family issues from sexuality, identity, violence and secrets. I really enjoyed this well paced novel, and look forward to her new novel to be released in 2027 by @wearefootnote

Desirée de Fez’s debut novel DON’T LEAVE HER ALONE publishes today in the US with Putnam and in the UK with Footnote with this gorgeous hardback edition—originally published in Spanish with @blackiebooks and all other rights available.

“Being mothers and being daughters can feel like body horror, and that is what Desiree de Fez’s brilliant debut novel does: it turns bonds of intense love into torn bodies, glitter, and anxiety. Don’t Leave Her Alone is full of tenderness and delirium, moving between suburban realism and fairy tale.”
—Mariana Enriquez, International Booker Prize-shortlisted author of The Dangers of Smoking in Bed

“A darkly enchanted expedition into the eviscerating oblivion of motherhood. de Fez writes with her sharpest knife.”
—Rachel Yoder, author of Nightbitch

“Compelling to the point of hypnotic, a tender and visceral study of mothers, daughters and sisters that recalls the best of King, Enriquez and Almodóvar, but which is ultimately uniquely its own. A gem.”
—Virginia Feito, author of Victorian Psycho

The Coin by Yasmin Zaher is a bold, strange, and deeply unsettling novel about identity, control, and the ways we try to make sense of ourselves in a world that constantly asks us to fit into its rules.

Following a young Palestinian woman teaching in a New York middle school, the novel moves between displacement, obsession, wealth, the body, and the desire for control. The Birkin bag scheme adds an absurd and fascinating layer to the story, while beneath it lies something much more personal: a woman trying to understand herself and find a sense of power in a life that often feels out of her hands.

Zaher’s writing is sharp, unconventional, and darkly funny. The Coin is not an easy or predictable read, but that is exactly what makes it memorable. It stays with you long after you finish it.

We love a body horror book in this house. 🎣🧜🏼‍♀️

Chlorine by Jade Song follows Ren Yu through her formative years as a teenager, alongside the usual teenage angst, she discovers her penchant for swimming and the subsequent passion and pressures that exist with it. What follows is an exploration of how a fixation can turn toxic and how burnout can manifest itself in malevolent ways.

From a young age, she has been captivated by myths and magic, manifesting itself in a fixation of mermaids in particular. Ren yearns to become one with the water, the ongoing presence of feeling disconnected from other human beings translates itself in a way where she craves to become one of the misunderstood creatures that she reads about in order to escape. All Ren wants is to succeed, no matter what she has to do to get there.

Now, onto my thoughts and feelings. Don’t get me wrong, it was interesting and the prose itself was descriptive, easy to follow, and witty in all the right places, however, it just fell flat from what I think it could’ve been. The concept delivered more impressively than the result - something that I’ve been finding in a lot of recent reads unfortunately.

I’m not saying that I didn’t enjoy it or that it was bad; the descriptive language caused me discomfort at times, especially as Ren reached her breaking point, and that’s one of the greatest compliments I can give on how it delivers what it sets out to achieve. I just felt ‘meh’ at how the concept and story developed.

First horror book of the spooky season complete ✅️

I expected A Darker Shade to creep me out.

I didn't expect it to hit quite so many uncomfortable truths.

This collection of horror stories from women writers isn't filled with monsters, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night. The real horror often comes from something much closer to home: the treatment of women, the realities of women's health, impossible beauty standards, and the quiet rage that builds when you're expected to endure it all with a smile.

And honestly? That was the scariest part.

Many of these stories struck some genuinely unsettling nerves because the fears at their core felt so recognisable. The horror may be fictional, but the emotions behind it are very real.

Like any anthology, some stories resonated with me more than others, but the collection as a whole left me thinking and that's exactly what I want from horror.

Reading this has also made me even more excited to attend the Women in Horror event hosted by @waterstonesnotts and @3.ambooks later this month. If A Darker Shade proves anything, it's that women are creating some of the most thought-provoking, unsettling, and unforgettable horror out there right now.

Have you read any horror written by women that has stayed with you long after the final page? Who is your favourite female horror writer?
