James are always a band who can somehow make the beautiful and the downright peculiar sit comfortably alongside each other, and Laid is a wonderful example of that. There's a lovely looseness to this record, with acoustic guitars, unexpected rhythms and melodies that can be both disarmingly simple and strangely affecting.
Tim Booth's voice is such a huge part of it all. Vulnerable, eccentric, occasionally almost unhinged, he has a way of making even the strangest lyrical detours feel completely human. There's an emotional openness here that I find really affecting, those moments when love, longing, insecurity and sheer joy all seem to spill into one another. The title track is gloriously cheeky, Sometimes is one of those songs that can still give me goosebumps, and Out to Get You has a romantic, melancholy beauty that gets under your skin. There's a tenderness to it that never feels sentimental, just painfully real.

Brian Eno's perfect production gives the album space and atmosphere without losing the band's warmth or their slightly oddball character. It's intimate one minute, euphoric the next, and never quite what you expect. There's a real sense of humanity running through it all, the messiness of relationships, the need to connect with someone, and those fleeting moments when everything suddenly feels right.

James were always a bit different, and thank goodness for that. I love how this album can make me smile, feel a little wistful and then completely sweep me away, sometimes within the space of a few songs.
A wonderful, peculiar, utterly beautiful individual record...

The band’s feelings toward the song have sometimes been mixed. Although “Sit Down” was initially a phenomenon, Booth began to see its overbearing effect, as he told Classic Pop Magazine:

“It started to overshadow all our other babies, like Ring The Bells or Sometimes, which we thought were equally important, beautiful pieces of music”

Tim went on further:

“We got a bit salty around it at one point”
