SHORTS SHOWCASE 4 + GONE QUACKERS: THE BURNING QUESTION Dark Nights: What’s the one film – if you had to single one out – that was either the biggest inspiration for you in deciding to become a filmmaker, or has made the biggest impact on you since becoming a filmmaker, and why? PV Lehtinen, IURIMA - A TALE OF THREE FISHMEN Godfrey Reggio's KOYAANISQATSI has had the biggest impact on me as a young filmmaker. A striking portrayal of a creature living on Earth called man. The film makes me think about humanity and what a strange creature man is. A timeless masterpiece that is still one of the most important films to me. Paul Holbrook, WHEN SHE SINGS The first seed was planted by PULP FICTION, hearing such colourful dialogue and sharp, cool sequences felt like nothing I’d seen before. Then came Shane Meadow’s DEAD MAN’S SHOES which again felt super fresh and different to anything I’d seen before. Finally, it was a re-watch of Scorsese’s TAXI DRIVER that suddenly absolutely nailed down the importance of attaching stories to tone. Anne Zinn-Justin, BESTIARY If I had to choose one film, it would probably be THE ISLE by Kim Ki-duk. It opened up a completely different kind of cinema for me. I was fascinated by its atmosphere, the beauty of the images, the tension, and by characters who barely speak. So much is told through images, bodies, silence and the environment. I remember thinking: this is a kind of cinema I want to explore. SHORT preceding THE TURKISH COFFEE TABLE: Annie Buckeridge, GONE QUACKERS THE THING in particular features themes of transformation (similarly seen in my short film). Also, the use of prosthetics and practical effects are part of what I really love about this film. The reason I got into film making and my biggest inspiration is “Bagpuss”. The stop-motion 70s children's television show is comfortable and charming (though I have often heard it suggested there is something creepy about it...) I also love the imperfections of the animation. #darknightsfilmfest #sydneyevents #shorthorrorfilms #seeyouinthedark #indiefilmmaking
