SETI AIR Newsletter - October 2024

Conversations about #AI and #machinelearning continue to permeate society, be it #ChatGPT4, text-to-video generators such as #Sora, or discussions surrounding #fakenews and #copyright. AI is a phenomenal tool, but it also comes with opportunities and concerns that should be addressed. That is why we launched the Algorithmic Imaginings residency, which invites #artists working at the intersection of #art and #technology to explore new avenues of thinking about AI and connect them to the research taking place at the SETI Institute. I can’t wait to see the work that will emerge from this residency. We have just selected our shortlist of nominees; stay tuned for the announcement of the winner in November!

Speaking of winners, we welcome our Cosmic Consciousness residency recipients - see who they are and catch up on the latest #SETIAIR news and events in this issue of SETI AIR News.

Wishing you clear skies (and good comet-hunting!),

A mini installation
SETI Institute
2024

Left a selection of our workshop prompts and outcomes at the Institute for curious exploration and understanding of some of our methods for engagement.

A fabulous two weeks with @wearenonrandom kicking off multiple ideas for exploration as part of our Artist In Residence programme of activity over the next two years.

SETI AIR Newsletter: July 2024

Suppose global warming raised temperatures so drastically that crops failed and caused world hunger. Would you support the idea of gene editing humans’ skin cells so that photosynthesis would become an alternative source of human nutrition? The Non Random Arts Collective is currently at the SETI Institute, offering workshops to our scientists and artists that explore fascinating scenarios connecting climate change, habitability, and gene editing. The discussions, short fiction stories, drawings, and small sculptures resulting from these workshops provide critical new perspectives on the future of humanity - and our planet. The Non Random Arts Collective is the newest affiliate of the SETI AIR program, as is writer and editor Michael Nardone, who is investigating exolinguistics and exomusicology. Find out more about our newest AIRs at the #linkinbio!

Wishing you clear skies,
Bettina

GAIA.
Non Random Artist Collective. 2022.

An online game world survey application for our research and development arts science project - Evolving Ourselves with Unnatural Selection.

Now live for anyone to play, this web based interactive audio visual 3D world examines future scenarios relating to the gene editing of plants, animals and humans. Speculative narratives, backed up with real world future modelling, we want to question and think about the ethics and impact our choices may have on our world.

Prototyped in three.js before moving to react and converting to react-three-fiber. Uses mongodb and various other front and back end technologies.

Read more about the project, the creative process and sign-up and give it a go yourself.

@wearenonrandom is an artist-led collective who work at the intersection of arts and science, launching their survey game app GAIA at the Bidston Observatory on the 25th of June. Funded by @creativescots their project, Evolving Ourselves with Unnatural Selection, examines through art, the ethics of communicating scientific futures. Non-Random asked scientists, ethicists, ecologists, artists, sociologists and those living with or supporting people with genetic conditions, to explore the future of gene editing in a rapidly transforming global ecosystem. From these discussions emerged the GAIA game world survey. This immersive audio-visual world asks the user to engage with ethical questions about real and future scenarios.

Some of these scenarios include; exploring what might happen if we choose to edit out diseases or inherited conditions, alter humans, animals and plants for space travel and interplanetary colonisation and creating hybrid creatures to exist within our rapidly transforming planet. All choices have an impact, and you, the player, will see the impact of your choices and read about the potential consequences of those choices. What choices will you make within this imagined world, and why?

The game will be available to play through the Saturday event, with discussions on the ethical questions it highlights taking place across the weekend.

Tickets are still available on a sliding scale for the Sound Re-Dug day event on the 25th of June which includes the BOARC day user rate, dinner + Eventbrite fees. Spaces will be limited, so pre-booking is essential. More info in the link above.

Excited to see you all!

Gene Editing for a Better Future. 2021.

This is what happens when you ask an AI Image Generator a series of prompts for images and it tries to create them for you. I'll let you guess what titles I used to create these works of art.

Creating using #vqgan machine learning techniques. Each one took around 10 minutes to compute and these are the final images after 500 steps.

Created as a series of experiments for the current @wearenonrandom project - Evolving Ourselves with Unnatural Selection. Videos can be found on our blog.
