Observing the call to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation, In Our Names Network reached across our network to collect testimonies about members' first time interacting with law enforcement. These interactions start early with schools too often acting as sites of first harm. Tammaka - @weareyase - was 15 the first time a cop threatened to assault her with a taser. When a School Resource Officer body-slammed a Black girl during lunch, #TheyWere the girl's only defender in a room full of adult teachers and teenage bystanders. Like other students, Tammaka was cool with the offending SRO before that day. The fact he could harm them never crossed their mind. "I definitely didn't speak to him after that," Tammaka said. "I was already side-eyeing him but because he hadn't done anything personal to me, I didn't have any negative feelings towards him outside of him being a police officer in general." Tammaka didn't receive any recovery care after the incident. Even though her school was resourced with police officers, there wasn't a single trauma-informed mental health professional who could offer her support. Routinely, the conversation around police brutality excludes Black women like Tammaka despite the fact we are disproportionately overrepresented in cases of police violence. What's worse? We can't rely on the people around us to stand up and intervene on our behalf. At 15, Tammaka developed an always-on, hypervigilant mindset that she is only now — nearly two decades later — learning to let go. In Our Names Network knows the first step to Black liberation is removing police from schools. That's why we organize under our Police-Free Schools campaign and host youth teach-ins all over the nation.
