While training Dr. Nkosi Muse, I got to uncover the systems behind how he performs at the highest level. Not just physically. Mentally, emotionally, under real pressure, when it counts. 💪

He’s a Harvard Environmental Fellow researching climate change and heat adaptation, with a PhD in Environmental Science and Policy from the University of Miami. His work has taken him from advising Miami’s City Commissioners to his current research on environmental justice and intensifying heat hazards globally. He’s also a former Division I track and field athlete and a Hyrox competitor currently working his way back from a significant injury.

What struck me most: his discipline didn’t start in a lab. It started as a kid, watching his father prioritize fitness. That’s where the systems began. 🙌

This is a short preview from Episode 1 of Raising the Bar 🎙️ a series built on one idea: game day looks different depending on your profession (a courtroom, a boardroom, a startline, a lab), but the systems that get you there don’t have to.

The full episode is live now. Want it?

👇 Comment “RAISING THE BAR” and I’ll send you the link.

A little recap of the journey it’s been since I started @ranierfit. Won the 3A state championship then lost my job due to Covid. No government assistance, 0 income, no plan B! Just had to find a way to survive. Began personal training in my living room and inviting former athletes to come training wherever we felt comfortable.

Quickly grew after one year due to the fact that my prices were probably extremely low or maybe I was doing something right? But I was able to move into a gym after certain bans of the pandemic were lifted. I registered RanierFit as an LLC and started operating as a legitimate business. We quickly gained some notoriety from our work and was featured on @wccbcharlotte for our services.

Things started really moving around 2022. I was grinding. Business owning and self employment really allowed me to lean into my creativeness. I wanted to bring strength & conditioning / sports performance to AAU basketball. Since 2018 I asked double digit teams to give me a shot. Only team that said yes was Team Curry. What a special year this was too because I had the opportunity to work with some of the best players in the country. I was traveling with the team almost every weekend, all while running RanierFit on the weekdays.

2023 was extremely memorable due to the fact that I signed my first NBA and NFL clients. Those experiences gave me a lot of moments of impostor syndrome, but also provided lessons that built confidence. I was definitely over working myself this year. Driving across town for a recovery session, waking up at 3:30am to get to west charlotte for a 4:30am session, coming back to the gym to then train with my regular clients for 6-7 hours, leaving on the weekend to travel with team curry.

This year was filled with lessons. A lot of trials and tribulations. Burn out. Adversity. But still growth. I realized that community and culture is everything. Without it, it’s a vehicle without a steering wheel. I leaned into my leadership traits and began building a community that had purpose and was intentional about who came in and out of my gym doors.

2025 is where I realized there is a difference between owning a business and being self employe

Nkosi has turned a passion for weather into a commitment to climate justice. At Rosenstiel, he partnered with nonprofits, advised city leaders, and became a trusted voice on climate issues, all while completing his doctorate in Environmental Science and Policy.

This fall, he takes the next step as an Environmental Research Fellow at Harvard, continuing his mission to protect people and the planet. We are so proud to celebrate Nkosi as part of our 2025 Graduate Profiles! 🙌🎉
