An exceptional masterpiece by the seldom heard Henri Blanc, featuring the most desirable configuration possible.

Born in Neuchâtel in 1873, Henri Blanc quickly moved to Geneva, where he became one of the most established watchmakers of the early 20th century.
Such that he opened his workshop in the prestigious 37 Rue du Rhone, where at some point he was even addressed as chief of maintenance for the Geneva city clocks.

Beside being a technician, he also founded his eponymous retailer, dealing with prestigious brands such as Vacheron Constantin, Longines and Movado and manufacturer of its own watches.

Among the few watches created by Henri Blanc, the present example stands out for being one of the most attractive and rarest ever appeared.

Bearing an impressive 42X26mm size, it can be regarded as a true oversize for its era and, most importantly, the case shows a two-tone execution in yellow and pink gold.

The overall imposing and lavish aesthetic makes it a most beautiful piece of design and a great testimony of the flamboyant era it was conceived.

It bears the much sought-after pink on pink configuration, with the dial featuring a warm salmon tone paired with Breguet indexes.

The only other example seen (might well be the same) has been auctioned by Antiquorum in the 1990's.

This exceptional Universal Genève Ideo (later known as the "Cabriolet") represents a pinnacle of 1930s Art Deco design. The watch features an ingenious vertical-flip mechanism: the inner case pivots on a hinge, allowing the dial to rotate 180° into the frame to protect the crystal from impacts. This specific example is distinguished by its rare black gilt dial, double-signed by the prestigious Milanese retailer Gobbi. This model was also characterized by its innovative "Parashock" technology and high-grade Staybrite steel case.

This rare Italian advertisement from September 1934 provides a definitive look at Universal Genève’s vision for the "elegant sportsman". Marketed as an Orologio Roveseiabile (reversible watch), the Ideo was engineered specifically to be protected from impacts. It represents a pivotal moment in the 1930s when UG was moving beyond pure aesthetics to solve real-world durability issues for its high-society clientele.

A highly attractive oversized 37mm stainless steel Compax ref 22501 featuring a stunning black "glossy" dial. Its striking vintage layout, including the distinctive oversized '12' numeral and three Compax registers, makes it an icon of the 1940s.
Note: The crown has probably been replaced.

Mariposa: I’m not sure whether it was conscious or not but I had been studying @tadao_ando_ando ‘s works a few months before embarking on this project. These pictures are taken with images of portions of his buildings which have a strong parallel with the dial of Mariposa. Of course, many other works and watches have similar design attributes, but reflecting on my design I feel like I was somewhat influenced by his architecture.

Second image: Closely spaced parallel vertical lines match the wooden beam pattern.

Third image: The ring around the sub-seconds was directly influenced by this image. The two layers of the roof are slightly offset. The seconds ring has two offset sets of lines on the inside and outside of the ring.

Mariposa: The first picture has the watch on the case of the donor desk clock. The desk clocks’s case is surprisingly industrial. It is a simple block of aluminium - well machined but does not have any decorative features. With our watch we wanted to balance something aesthetically sophisticated while still reflecting the movement’s more industrial look and finish. Similarly in the second image, our dial is a similar monochrome single piece of metal as the donor dial. We have enhanced the visual appeal with different finishing on the dial to add interest and contrast. I toyed with both blue and purple hands and we ultimately chose to use purple hands because they pop better and add that special factor to an otherwise muted, monochrome watch.

Mariposa: The Cal360 is a relatively large movement, so to keep the watch’s lug to lug to under 45mm meant that the seal couldn’t be a placed around the movement like most watches do. The seal sits at the same perimeter as the movement so it is stacked below the movement. This added thickness which I have tried to manage with the sloping sides of the case. That design element both reduces the appearance of thickness and also gives the watch a great deal of dimensionality and three dimensional form. The shoulders (as @weezergallery calls them) or crown guards, further reduce the apparent thickness and provide a visual break from the side with their polished surfaces contrasting against the graining of the side of the case. From the second image you can see how deep the movement sits inside the case to make room for the seal. The caseback is simple and has a display back matching the shape of the movement. The finishing with straight graining is coherent with the movement finishing.
