The FEATURED PICK in this week’s 13ThingsLA is…Vojislav Radovanović: Bird Circuit 90069, artist reception, Friday, October 16, 7-9pm at WeHo Public Library. Like many, Radovanović finds inspiration in nature, with flora and fauna as the ideal emotional and narrative vessels. But in this second iteration of his Bird Circuit series, he takes all the things he is and finds further inspiration in a lesser-known chapter of queer history—the color/bird code that let folks know which the safe bars were. Like many cities, West Hollywood had its own “bird circuit” with bars dedicated to flamingos, blue parrots, and red ravens. The botanical, avian, and human depictions in this new series show off the storytelling power of his delicately maximalist, soulfully classical style. Exhibition on view through January 2027.

The title of the show comes from the The original Bird Circuit that was actually a series of venues in NYC during the 1950’s with bird themed names, which covertly signaled themselves as places of queer refuge and connection during times of intense social and legal oppression. Several works in this exhibition pay homage to historic LGBTQ clubs in West Hollywood and Silver Lake, such as the Red Raven, Blue Parrot, and Flamingos.

“Through painting and drawing, Radovanović conjures a poetic aviary where birds become metaphors for freedom and coded identity. Radovanović transforms these hidden sanctuaries into surreal images, often combining male portraiture with dreamlike landscapes and feathered figures that shimmer with history and desire. Bird Circuit 90069 celebrates queer resilience, acknowledging a lineage of coded survival while reimagining it as a vibrant, contemporary myth.”

A little art, a little history, and a whole lot of queer storytelling.

“Bird Circuit 90069” by Los Angeles–based queer artist Vojislav Radovanović, @mr.voicelove, explores myth, personal narrative, and the coded history of LGBTQ+ spaces. The new exhibition highlights the “bird circuit,” a naming convention once used by queer bars as a signal of refuge and connection.

Now on display at @weholibrary and brought to you by the City of West Hollywood and @wehoarts. Stop by and see it for yourself! 🐦
