We proudly welcomed the physician assistant Class of 2028 at our White Coat Ceremony!

Fifty students received their white coats from leaders, marking the start of their educational journey. The 27-month-long program offers 15 clinical rotations, allowing students to experience a range of healthcare specialties.

“Today marks the beginning of a remarkable journey,” said Dr. Kelly Porta, PA program director.

“Each of you arrives here with unique experiences, talents and aspirations, but you now share a common purpose: a commitment to serving patients, advancing healthcare, and embracing the values of Weill Cornell Medicine and the PA profession.”

Growing up in Nepal, Kripa Paudel spent many hours watching her father, a certified pharmacist, take care of people in his community health clinic.

“He would see patients for things like wound dressing and would use his knowledge of pharmaceuticals to help people. He was always taking care of others,” recalls Kripa, now an incoming first-year physician assistant student at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Kripa was eight years old when her family moved to the U.S. and settled in Boston. Her parents, who didn’t have opportunities to advance their education in Nepal, encouraged Kripa to focus on school.

She always imagined a career in medicine, but didn’t know anything about the physician assistant path until she was a teenager, and her father was hospitalized.

Kripa assumed the person in the white coat taking care of her father every day was the attending doctor.

“That was the first time I met a physician assistant and learned about what they do,” she says. “I also came to appreciate how closely and directly they work with patients in their care.”

Kripa also liked the idea that PAs can work in different specialties, independently or within a physician’s practice.

“I think the profession’s flexibility and the hands-on patient care will give me more of what I want in life and my career,” says Kripa, who worked as a medical assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital (@massgeneral) after graduating from Boston University (@bostonu).

Joining the PA Class of 2028 also fulfills Kripa’s longtime dream of living in New York City.

“There is so much diversity and representation here and that’s important to me,” she says. “I want to learn to become a provider who is empathetic and culturally sensitive.”

The White Coat Ceremony marks the beginning of her career as a medical professional and gives her a moment to reflect.

“My mom supported me emotionally through the rigors of school until now, and went to great lengths to connect me with people in the medical field for learning opportunities,” Kripa says.

Receiving the white coat “is culmination of not only my work, but my parents’ work and everything they represent. They sacrificed so much for me.”
