Released in 2006, “Ijoya” became one of the defining Nigerian party records of its era and marked @weirdmcofficial ’s major return to the Nigerian music scene after spending years in the United Kingdom. The song was built around a catchy bassline, Yoruba drums, hip-hop influence and an unforgettable hook that turned the entire record into a call to the dancefloor.

Produced by JJC and @DonJazzy, “Ijoya” showed how powerful the combination of rap, Afrobeat-inspired rhythms and street-ready energy could be. Weird MC’s delivery was confident, playful and completely her own, while the production gave the song enough bounce to work across different generations.

The record was not just popular with young listeners. Its appeal stretched across youth and adult audiences, helping establish it as one of the standout party songs of the mid-2000s.

“Ijoya” also became an important moment in Weird MC’s career. It helped bring her back into the centre of Nigerian pop culture and earned major recognition, including the Best Pop Album award at the 2006 Headies, according to contemporary retrospectives.

The song’s influence also extended visually. Weird MC created both a live-action video and an animated version, with the animated visual receiving strong rotation on MTV Base Africa at the time.

Beyond the nostalgia, “Ijoya” remains important because it captured a period when Nigerian artists were confidently blending hip-hop, Yoruba language, Afrobeat textures and dance music without worrying about fitting into one box.
