POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A YEAR THAT CHANGED ME
Last year changed me.
It changed my family, the way I see this country, and the way I understand fear, resilience, community, and my responsibility as an artist.
One of my family members was detained by ICE.
I cannot explain the fear of not knowing if someone you love is coming home;or what it feels like to look at a ten-year-old child and have no answers about why her father is gone.
We fought, asked for help, and used every resource we had. Through extraordinary support, persistence, and what felt like a miracle

WE brought him home!

Back to his family.
Back to his children.
Back to the people who love him.

I will never take that for granted.

But not every family gets that ending. Some do not have the resources, connections, money, or strength to keep fighting. Behind every immigration story is a human being: a father, a mother, a child, a family, a life.
That experience made immigration personal. It showed me how quickly fear can enter a family when your identity, skin, accent, or origins can suddenly make you vulnerable.
I have lived in this country for 26 years. I have built a life here, created here, and loved this place as my second home. Last year, I saw a side of it that broke my heart.
At the same time, we were premiering “Unseen Territories”.

The film became deeply important to me. I was honored to produce it alongside local artists and filmmakers who believed in creating something together. I am grateful to my longtime friend and colleague, Shahab Zargari, for bringing the project to life, to the Director (Sidney Galindo) for her vision, and to everyone who gave their talent, time, and heart.
While my family was facing one of the hardest moments of our lives, I was surrounded by people creating—and that kept me going.
Cinema gave me somewhere to place the fear. Photography helped me process what I was seeing. Art gave me a reason to keep moving, and community reminded me that we were not alone.

Then the film began traveling.
So this is my promise:
“I will keep creating”
Fear will not have the final word.
I am a proud immigrant and a proud artist,
Through my lens, my art, and my voice, I will keep telling our stories…

This past Saturday we had Carol Anne McChrystal bring her CreAtive Healing Lab workshop to TeAda where we worked with discarded food packaging, tetrapaks, discarded plastic waste, and recycled material to craft small woven objects.

We learned about her intimate work with traditional palm weavers in the Philippines, discussing the global north’s capitalization on sacred practices, climate change, the exploitation of local weavers, pollution, and the reclamation of these traditions as they pertain to ancestral knowledge, shelter/protection and agency among weavers and the Pilipino people.

Mahalo nui to all who participated, and shared their knowledge, makings, and concerns through this powerful gathering

This was our very first Weaving Workshop at TeAda!

🎁 To help us continue offering CreAtive Healing Lab in the future, and to help us sustain this necessary space for community, please consider donating to TeAda at teada.org/donate ( link in bio ) 🎁 your support keeps CreAtive Healing alive!!! 🎁

please make sure to follow Carol Anne McChrystal ( @carolannemcchrystal ) for future workshops, and programs that are all tied to imagining anti-imperialist futures!!! 🤝🤝🤝

✨ INTRODUCING... “Where is the Middle of the Sea: Philippine Palm Weaving in a Changing Climate” >>> The 8TH CreAtive Healing Lab (CHL) Workshop this Spring <<< Saturday, May 30th @ 10am in West Los Angeles >>> ✨ link to sign up in bio 🔗 bit.ly/CHL2526 🔗 ✨

In this participatory workshop, we will explore how ancestral palm weaving traditions from the Philippines are being transformed by climate change, migration, and material insecurity. Through a blend of storytelling, cultural history, and hands-on creative practice, participants will learn to repurpose discarded food packaging into weaving material and craft their own small woven object. Drawing from my own experiences with Filipino weavers and my Pasalubong series—woven artworks made from waste—we’ll explore cultural memory, ecological loss, and the changing shape of tradition. Together, we’ll ask: What does it mean to inherit a tradition when its original materials—and even its landscapes—are disappearing? This workshop is a space for healing, connection, and creative resistance through craft.

This workshop will be facilitated by Carol Anne McChrystal! 💫

Carol Anne McChrystal ( @carolannemcchrystal ) is a visual artist whose materially-driven works are inspired by the traditional plaited mats of her two island homelands: Ireland and the Philippines. Her self-taught weaving practice reflects on how diasporic traditions transform through migration, climate crisis, and global industry. Interweaving discarded plastic waste and gathered plant materials, she explores themes of ancestral knowledge, shelter, and political agency—imagining anti-imperialist futures rooted in both memory and contemporary material conditions. www.carolannemcchrystal.com

If you want to create something out of nothing, it starts with yourself and the fire within you.

Very grateful for this mention in “Unseen Territories.” Being part of a project filled with so much energy, hope, art, and community means the world to me; especially during times when the world feels heavy, and when my own family was navigating uncertain moments.

This was my first time producing a film alongside such incredibly talented artists, and I’m deeply thankful for the experience.

Thank you Sydney, and my Persian brother, “Master Shahab”, for always inspiring not only me but all of us. Your vision, creativity, and leadership continue to be a light in times of darkness.

Congratulations on your nominations — so well deserved.

Please join us March 19 at UNLV for the screening of Unseen Territories at 4:20 PM. 🎬✨
