Big patient shout out to this impressive couple for completing the Ironman World Championship in Kona Hawaii!!!! 🎉

Wendy was kind enough to share some of her and her husband’s experiences along the way. Here is a glimpse of what their journey looked like through Wendy’s point of view…

“Jeff and I have been competitive triathletes for 20 years.  We both qualified for this year’s Ironman World Championship at Ironman Florida last November.  Our winter to spring training went well and was trending for a successful Kona.
However, in May my left knee started to hurt and later learned I had grade 4 osteoarthritis in my patella-femoral joint.  In June, Jeff had an acute injury to his right knee which resulted in a meniscus tear. So both of us were “broken” with the biggest race of the year looming.
We relied on what we could do, no running for me, no running or biking for Jeff.  We utilized the expertise of Coltman & Baughman physical therapists (Thomas for me, Mariana & Rob for Jeff) to get us to the best possible form prior to leaving for the Big Island.

We both made it to the finish line.  The run was more of a run/walk and no PRs were set, but we were both grateful to be healthy enough to start and finish the race.  Jeff even decided to wait for me about about a 1/2 mile from the finish so we could finish together.  After 27 Ironmans between the 2 of us and multiple Kona finishes, this one was pretty special.”

We qualified together. We fought through injuries together. And in the end, we crossed the finish line together. ❤️🌺

It wasn’t the race either of us had dreamed of, but maybe that’s what made it even more meaningful.

The road to Kona tested us in ways we never expected. But we made it to the start, made it through the fight, and crossed that finish line hand in hand.

No perfect performances. No perfect season. Just two people who refused to give up on the dream.

Last night, the world came to my hometown of Kona for the IRONMAN World Championship, and some of the most inspiring moments in sport played out right in front of me. Watching it in person is one of the highlights of my year.

My favorite place to be is Ali’i Drive in the evening, near the finish line. The athletes coming in at this hour aren’t pros. They had to qualify just to be here, and many of them weren’t sure their bodies would carry them through 140.6 miles of swimming, biking, and running. By now they’ve been out on this course for more than 12 hours.

Standing there screaming “you’ve got this!!” through their last mile is something I’ll never get tired of. You’re cheering right alongside families who flew in from all over the world to watch the people they love chase a dream they’ve given everything to.

Now I get to share it with my kids. Watching them cheer for complete strangers, and seeing them understand what months of early mornings and hard work can lead to. I want them to see that dreams are earned by hard work, discipline, with heart, one mile at a time.

As an athlete myself, and someone who loves people from every corner of the globe, this gets me every time. Flags waving, countries side by side, everyone pushing toward the same finish line. No hatred, no borders, just one shared goal. It brings me to tears.

Mahalo to every athlete and every family for bringing the world to Kona.

Ho’olōkahi - that was the theme of the 2026 Ironman World Championship. It speaks to the spirit of connection and unity.

After what was a challenging season for us both, there was perhaps no better way to celebrate our journey as partners, crossing this finish line together.

This was not the race-day either of us had envisioned, but it was the finish-line that neither of us could have imagined…

Today was about having fun, connecting with old friends, and soaking up a bit of the “KONA” energy.

It’s amazing to be here with such an inspiring group of individuals that make up RŌKA STNDRD Racing, and I’m excited to see each and every one out there on course, plus all the family, friends and RŌKA Multisport staff pumping us up along the way!

Day 2 on the Big Island…

First thing in the morning was the Ho`āla Training Swim - always a great pre-race event for those who can get here to Kona early enough! We had a solid group of the RŌKA STNDRD Racing crew jump in, and we even got a quick shot with the legendary Bob Babbitt!

Then Wendy and I got the bikes built up rolled out a 90-minute, afternoon ride in maybe the windiest weather I have ever ridden here…fortunately the forecast for next Saturday looks a tad more favorable!

I wish I could say my knee was feeling amazing…but I’m still hopeful I can manage the course come race day. 😬

First full day on the Big Island! 🏝️

Coffee with the crew…then a short run and a quick open-water swim for Wendy and myself. Then Filip joined and we all ran some errands and stocked up on groceries before the place gets packed next week!

Our bikes finally arrived (late in the evening, but they are here!!! 👊

Time to get this party started!!! 🎉 🌺.🌊
