As part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration, the Rotary Club of Raleigh is helping lead an effort to plant more than 250 oak trees throughout our city, honoring Raleigh’s proud legacy as the City of Oaks. And today, we’re celebrating with OAKTOBER! 📍 Dix Park – Harvey Field 📅 TODAY, Saturday, October 10 ⏰ 11 AM – 6 PM 🎶 Live music beginning at 2 PM: * 2 PM – David Dyer * 3 PM – Chris Cooke * 4 PM – Dave Devlin * 5 PM – One Tribe 🍺 Founders Brewing Beer Tent from 2–6 PM! All proceeds will support planting trees right here in Raleigh! Did you know Raleigh has set a goal of planting 24,000 trees by 2032? Our Rotary Club is proud to be part of that effort, working with community partners to make Raleigh greener, healthier, and more beautiful for generations to come. A tree isn’t just something we plant. It’s something we invest in. A big thank-you to our presenting sponsor, North State Bank, and all the partners helping make this celebration possible! Come out, enjoy the festivities, support a great cause, and help us celebrate the community we love. Hope to see you there! 🌳 #OAKTOBER #RotaryClubOfRaleigh #CityOfOaks #DixPark #TreesForTheTriangle

Happy fall y’all! 🍁 With the return of fall, now is the best time to learn how to care for your trees. Prime planting season is about to start as cool air and warm soils create ideal conditions for trees to develop roots without the stress of summer heat. But it is important to think about what, where, and how you are planting trees to maximize their benefits for birds and people. To make it easy, we’re co-hosting a tree planting webinar with @treesforthetriangle and @weplantitforward on September 28, just in time for the fall planting season. Dig in: How, When, and Where to Plant Trees in Raleigh and Beyond 🗓️ September 28, 2026 📍 Virtual via Zoom 🕰️ 7-8pm ET Register for the webinar at the link in our bio. Forest Explorers 🌳🌱 Seeds, Trees & Poetry A look back at our morning at Lake Crabtree County Park #forestregenclimateinitiative #forestexplorers Students observed their trees using their senses: * What does your tree smell like? * What does it feel like? * What do you hear? * What do you see when you look beneath it? Check out our Tree Adoption Certificate! #treeadoption #foreestexplorers “Slow down. Look closely.”… Then, we found our words ✍🏾🍃 What would your tree say if it could talk? Students used their observations to write poetry inspired by their trees and the forest around them. Seed Hunt! 🌱 Seeds are the beginning of a new forest. Students got to see, collect, and learn about seeds up close. We collected and processed seeds from: 🌱 Eastern redbud We collected and processed seeds from: 🌸 American beautyberry Nature doesn’t always follow our plans. 🌳 We found a red buckeye, but there were only a few seeds available to collect. Drought conditions in parts of Wake County, NC have affected fruiting and seed development this season. Giving us a real-world lesson in how weather and climate can influence forest regeneration. #seedcollection #forestexplorers #stemeducation #environmentaleducation Meet the adopted trees 🌳❤️ Many of our Forest Explorers chose American holly as their adopted tree! We observed its characteristics, gave the trees names, and began building connection with the forest. We didn’t just learn about forests… 🌎 We experienced them. A morning of: 🌱 Seeds 🌳 Trees 👀 Observation ✍🏾 Poetry 🔎 Discovery 💚 Connection Because sometimes the best way to learn about the natural world is simply to slow down and spend time in it.

Tell @raleighgov to support tree planting by Nov. 30! The City of Raleigh is asking residents to provide input on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, and funding for preserving and expanding urban tree canopy is on the table. City leaders need to see strong support for tree planting in the annual budget survey to secure funds for trees to shade and cool our neighborhoods, support biodiversity, and reduce flooding. Here’s what you need to do: 📆 complete the 5-minute survey by November 30th ✅ list “Sustainability Programs” as a priority ✍️ write “Fund tree planting” in the “Additional Suggestions” box near the bottom of the survey 🤝 tag friends and share Need to know your City Council District for the survey? Search for your address at the link in our bio. Take the survey at the link in our bio. Thanks to @treesforthetriangle & @weplantitforward for their partnership on this important bird-friendly work.

This is the fourth year I’ve gotten to research and write a roundup of local nonprofits for @waltermagazine. Every year I finish the project feeling heartened for our city and blown away by the passionate nonprofit directors who see a need and do something about it, in creative and deeply human ways. This article is not meant to be political: rather, it’s civic in the broadest sense of the word. But. Digging into your community—staying clear eyed about what’s going on close to home and rolling up your sleeves to help—that’s a form of resistance. If you’re a Triangle dweller who’s lately been feeling the itch to do something—to dig in and push back—here’s a place to start. It’s just scratching the surface: our area is a deep well of incredible nonprofits! Link to the article is in my profile, to read more about the amazing local nonprofits that made this year’s list. @art.givers @thebarbershoptherapy @belongncorg CAHEC @cake4kids The Camel Club @ccfsocial @carolinacaresteam @cycncstate @coopercharitablefoundation @degamobilevetcare @figsofwakecounty @firstteetriangle Friends of the NC Accessible Books & Library Services @foodshuttle (Gardens for Everyone) @greymuzzleorg @layersofdignity @maameinc @northcarolinaartsinaction SaySo NC @survivorfriendly @wakeedpa (Tools4Schools) @weplantitforward @wheels4hopenc @youthambassadorsofservice
