What have the last 8 months taught me?

After the disappointment of missing the crossing window last week, I’ve been trying to find a way to pick myself back up again. Writing has always helped me do that, so I thought I’d share a few thoughts.

Many of you know this island crossing has been a dream of mine for years. This year also marks 10 years since my “re-birthday” — receiving life-saving stem cell treatment — so finally attempting it felt very meaningful.

Now… paddle boarder I am. Endurance athlete I am not 😅 Friends from my old Brighton days would probably say endurance for me used to mean a pub crawl or a “two-nighter”!

But this challenge became about far more than just the crossing itself. Mentally, it’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

Hours alone on the board. Self-doubt. Self-criticism. Wondering if I was fit enough, whether I’d trained enough, and not wanting to let people — or myself — down.

Then, one week before the weather window opened… Covid.

Naturally, i became a “covid denier” and I convinced myself I’d be fine in a couple of days. Reality had other ideas.

The weeks became days, the days became hours… and when the window finally arrived, so did the wind.

The Mediterranean has become so unpredictable over the years, and although weather forecasting is never exact, this one never really looked promising.

But this isn’t the end of the story — only the beginning.

The next planned attempt is September, so now it’s time to reset, rethink… and retrain 💙

Until then, all my love and energy goes back into the one project that has stood the test of time… Mallorca Sup 🩵

☀️☀️☀️Update☀️☀️☀️

Hola! 🤩🩵🏄‍♀️

The last couple of weeks have brought a well needed break in the bad weather that persisted throughout winter and into early spring ☀️

That means one thing .. we have finally been able to get on the water for some decent training, for the upcoming challenge!

@maikbeckerofficial arrived yesterday and we waisted no time! A 6.00 am start helped produce a PB for both of us of 25km - nearly to Cap De Formentor although not quite annoyingly! Next time!!

With the window looming in front of us, we will be assessing in the coming 14 days, where we are at physically and mentally.

Weather will also play a crucial role in whether “our window” is achievable, or whether we activate Plan B! 👌🏻

So stay tuned folks! 😍
