🎨 Painting is officially underway at Magdalene House! It’s one of the best signs yet that this project is nearing the finish line. Since breaking ground this spring, Union Mission and West Construction Company have replaced the roof, rebuilt damaged flooring, and rewired and re-plumbed the entire home — and now a fresh coat of color is going up on the walls. Magdalene House provides emergency shelter and wraparound support, including case management, food, transportation, childcare access, and counseling, for mothers and children experiencing homelessness, the fastest-growing homeless population in America. Last year, it gave 36 moms and 69 kids a safe place to stay for up to 90 days, with 98% moving on to stable housing of their own. This renovation will add two new family bedrooms, renovate all eight suites with private bathrooms, and create dedicated kitchens, laundry rooms, common areas, and a computer lab: spaces built for healing, not just housing. Once complete, Magdalene House will be able to serve 10+ additional mothers and 20-30 more children every year. We’re so grateful to West Construction, the Kole family, and every partner making this transformation possible. Thank you for helping us build a place where Savannah’s moms and kids can heal, rebuild, and grow together. 💙

The sledgehammers flew today at Magdalene House, and it was a moment worth celebrating. Union Mission staff, board members, supporters, the full West Construction Company team, and Don Kole himself came together this morning to officially kick off the Don & Kaye Kole Magdalene House Transformation and Expansion Project. It was one of those events where you could feel the weight of what’s being built, not just the walls, but the hope behind them. When the renovation is complete, Magdalene House will have fully updated family suites with private bathrooms, two kitchens, two laundry rooms, family common areas, a computer lab, and the capacity to serve more than 10 additional mothers and 20 to 30 additional children every year. In 2025, 98% of families who came through Magdalene House moved into stable housing. This expansion means even more families get that chance. Thank you to West Construction for their extraordinary in-kind commitment, to Don and Kaye Kole for their generosity and vision, and to every donor and partner who helped make today possible.

It’s always exciting when a detailed project like this comes through the shop. These ceiling truss finials are part of the Wesley Monumental Methodist Church ceiling restoration in Downtown Savannah by @westconstructionco . Maintaining the building’s historical accuracy was essential, so every element of the property is being carefully replicated—including these finials. Our millwork specialists worked from a surviving original to create a template of the finial profile. They then used that template to create knives that were used to mill wood moulding to match the sides of the finial. The moulding was the cut on a compound miter and assembled to create the four sides of the finial. After decorative trim pieces were added, they were sanded smooth and primed. Ready for delivery to the church! Swipe to see the building process and how these truss finials will be installed.

On Thursday April 9th, Union Mission and West Construction will swing the first sledgehammer to officially begin the transformation and expansion of the Don & Kaye Kole Magdalene House in Savannah, Georgia. Magdalene House is Union Mission’s emergency housing program for mothers and children experiencing homelessness, providing up to 90 days of shelter, food, case management, transportation, childcare access, and mental health support. In 2025, the program served 36 mothers and 69 children, with 98% of families moving into stable housing. The renovation will add two new family bedrooms and fully renovate all eight family suites with private bathrooms, two kitchens, two laundry rooms, family common areas, and a dedicated computer lab. When complete, the upgraded facility is expected to serve more than 10 additional mothers and 20 to 30 additional children every year. In this video, we hear from Magdalene House clients, Union Mission board members, and the West Construction team about what this project means for families in our community. A special thank you to West Construction for their extraordinary in-kind partnership, and to all the donors and sponsors making this expansion possible. “There are two things that make a room timeless: a sense of history and a piece of the future.” – Charlotte Moss The renovation of Hanak Hall reflects a careful balance between preservation and modern transformation. Originally constructed in 1872 as a four-story brick townhouse for William H. Baker, the building later served as home to the Georgia Medical Society for over a century. Today, the 11,000 SF structure serves as executive offices for the Savannah College of Art and Design. Original Italianate details remain intact throughout, including the decorative bracketed eave, cast iron window hoods, and the original fireplaces that now anchor the renovated interiors. The William Baker House has been listed as a contributing building within the Downtown Savannah Historic District since 1979.
