I am VERY excited to finally be presenting a new body of work that has lived in my head for the last several years … shortly after starting my silvering journey I knew this was a direction I wanted to take my work in but hadn’t the resources (or skill set). I’m proud to say that after much practice, experimentation and trial and error, I have produced a series of pieces that reflect exactly what I had imagined to create. I cannot wait to share these, and what’s to follow, with the world!

My sculpture Micro Botanica was selected as a finalist in this year's Yering Station Sculpture Award. I am pleased (and a bit sad) to say that it has been sold and will be installed in a garden in Singapore. The sculpture is on display at Yering Station until the 3rd December.

Announcing Peter Brook’s ‘Hints’

Brook’s current body of paintings draws on visual languages found in our online and urban environments. They are a response to both the pervasive digital algorithms and predictive systems that influence our current Western social and economic cultures, and the ordered abstract patterns found in our contemporary urban environment.

Backlit screens awash with a hyper-alternate reality of digital codes and structures, coupled with observations of light falling on patterns and surfaces in the built environment, provide Brook with a compositional framework for a developing exploration of the visual perception of colour.

The visual syntax of predictive digital systems and patterns from the urban environment are a vehicle for what Brook is calling ‘chromo plasticity’ where respective appearances of colour are influenced by the neighbouring colours, yielding both chromatic harmony and contrast.

Announcing Cally Lotz’ ‘Dipinti Recenti’

‘Making this work has been both liberating and a bit scary.

I have always wanted to see the reality of things with a literal interpretation. Now I find that when a painting is too preconceived it becomes boring - there has to be an element of risk taking and new painting challenges. The differences between this body of work and the last are driven by trying to disrupt conventions of representation.

Working with oil on rough clear primed cotton has allowed me to explore a new dimension. The canvas is a heavier weave than what I have been used to, and this changes the character of the depiction as well as the painting overall. The method of priming is different too, presenting an absorbent surface that requires more paint and vigorous brush techniques, whilst allowing softer outlines. All new challenges!

My aim is to increase a sense of abstraction and so avoid falling into straight forward illustration.’

Announcing Prifti / Hughes ‘The Lightness of Being’

Two established artists with their own recognised practice combine their own extensive knowledge of materials and skill of application. Colour palettes, placement of form and decisions about the paints own materiality and movement are negotiated to bring this suite of paintings together, giving a sense of excitement, coming together and completeness.

What an amazing night 🥂 Congratulations @artistdeanneeccles on the opening of your solo show ‘Body Sense Portal’.

•

‘Grand rising. Privileged to attend … opening night art exhibition. I was mesmerised with the magic of the artwork. If you get to melbourne definitely drop in. Thank you Deanne for gifting me a body sensory experience that ignited all of me. Very powerful.’

‘I really loved your paintings. I feel more calm and centred, thanks for giving permission in the space for that. It’s really awesome what you’re doing with your art and being you in general. I hope your art gets the attention it deserves from the wider society.’

‘I love the combined use of movement, body awareness, connection with country and with other realities. I hadn't come across these facets in visual art before - not in this way. Normally art exhibitions are engaging my intellect and I tend to feel drained by the visual art. This was not at all my experience with your work. I was much more invited to be with in my entirety :-) It was surprisingly uplifting and - energising is not the quite right word - more like enhancing. I really appreciate it.’

Announcing ‘Body Sense Portal’, a solo exhibition by Deanne Eccles.

Eccles has been exploring 'Body Sense' painting techniques for twenty years. She has been inspired by Goethe's theory of colour and philosophy, '...to whom nature begins to unveil her open secrets, feels an irresistible longing for her worthiest interpreter, art!'

Opening Reception: Thursday the 21st, 6 - 8 pm at West End Art Space. We hope to see you there.
