POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This time last year I was sailing through the sulu sea with aunty and cousins by my side, on a roro cargo ship, mind you, protected by the watchful eye of our guiding stars and of course, theeee ancestral mat. Those two days on that boat nursed the seeds to my first short film, Biraddali dancing on the horizon, a film that would premier the following month in London, then Vancouver..then, now.. the world. I’m in awe of how this tiny thread, birthed in the womb of the sulu sea wove such an expansive, illustrious story and our story of 2024 was a big trans-oceanic-route-austronesian-dolls-conjuring-story!!!

Thankful for all my fellow master weavers who conjured me and my people into spaces, especially humbled by the love of those curators who kept showing up for me and affirming these stories ( love you ed, Susan, Brook, Pasky and X ) and even more grateful for all I met on the way especially the Zollsss who reminded me home is where the girls are at. Keep weaving, keep sailing, keep conjuring 2025 ⚔️

“Echoes Beyond the Archipelago” at Western Front celebrates the pioneering work of Filipino composer and ethnomusicologist José Maceda. Maceda, often overlooked in music history, innovatively merged avant-garde techniques with traditional Asian music. Curated by Aki Onda, the exhibition showcases Maceda’s life and compositions through archives, including notable works like Pagsamba and Ugnayan.

“Echoes Beyond the Archipelago” continues until July 27th.

“...if we’re speaking about wounds and healing, was the integration of Daoism into all of this, into an artistic practice, which took me a very long time…to even find Daoism first of all, and then to be able to bring that in as a Chinese person and to not feel auto-Orientalizing or to not feel self-conscious about reading the Zhuangzi, or looking at the I Ching, doing all these things.” — Fan Wu

We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made the second series of Dear Friends & possible this year: to all the readers, for sharing their beautiful and engaging work; to Jonathan Alfaro for providing stunning backgrounds for each reading; to the Western Front for their generous hospitality and work on this series; and to you all, for showing up and creating such a warm space of community all year.

You can view recordings of each reading on our website.

We look forward to connecting with you again next year!

This is so dope! That’s me on the cover of The Wire magazine! Issue number muthafuckin’ four hundred and eighty-two! I’m bursting with joy! Also, I look goooood!! HAHAHHAHA!!!

The story was written by John Morrison (@john_liberator) and photography was done by Ike Edeani (@edeani). It was such a pleasure to meet and get to talk with these brothers for this feature. Everyone needs to check out what they are doing because its supa fly. Thank you, John, and Ike, for making this a beautiful experience. Y’all got a brother over here cheesin’ like crazy!

The dedicated support of Western Front, Northern Spy, We Jazz, and the Robert D Bielecki Foundation for fLuXkit Vancouver (its suite but sacred) has been deeply inspiring. So please go buy my album because it is a beautiful work of art that I believe will enrich your life.

I want to share another piece of news with you all. This Fall I will be joining the @wesleyan_u University Music Department as Assistant Professor of Music. I am beyond excited about being a part of the legacy of this department and starting a new relationship with a university I truly admire. I will speak more on this in a future post.

In the meantime, go buy Issue 482 of @thewiremagazine there are so many wonderful stories inside. Also, my homegurl Harmony Holiday has a feature in this issue too. Nok La Sol Ti Bor!!!
