Humbled and Grateful.

Last week I received the United States Forest Service Chief’s Award for the work I do in the casualty assistance space, specifically for catastrophically injured wildland firefighters and unfortunately this year, in the event of a loss.

This isn’t a ‘look at me’ post but rather a gesture of gratitude to those individuals and their families who have opened up and trusted me in some of the most challenging periods of their lives. Allowing a complete stranger to stand beside you and walk with you through recovery or loss is not easy, yet you’ve been kind enough to allow me to step into that space—I thank you for that because truly this award is about you and that trust you’ve placed in me.

And that thanks goes beyond the wildland firefighter and their family—it also goes to their crews, their friends and their leadership: thank you for allowing me to step in and support you. And for entrusting the care of your colleague, friend, and their family to me. It’s genuinely an honor and privilege that I do not take lightly.

I don’t do this work for recognition or any award, candidly I didn’t even know one could be recognized for it and that had never been something I’ve actively sought. I do it because it matters and because it’s the least I can do to help make things suck a little less.

And last but certainly not least is a sincere thank you and I love you to my amazing wife @coach_aubrielle who has supported and joined me in this space throughout it all.

This is not a skillset I’m particularly fond of having because it’s use is almost always following something tragic, but I’m thankful for the opportunity and trust to serve in these moments.
