Books become so much fun when you really understand what is happening in them. In a book like Josephine Wants to Dance, you have the perfect opportunity to really explore what the words mean by acting out what they say!

Exploring the meaning of words, while your child isn’t focused on sounding them out is a perfect way to build vocabulary and language skills. It’s especially important in the first few years of your child learning to read when sounding out a word still takes a lot of mental energy for your child!

Keeping the Show Fresh

One of the greatest challenges; and greatest joys of the NZ Art Show is ensuring that every year feels new.

While many of our artists have been part of the NZ Art Show whānau for years, we're always looking for new voices, new perspectives, and new creative journeys to share with our audiences.

Each year we welcome artists exhibiting with us for the very first time. Some arrive with established careers, while others are taking a brave step into a national audience. Together they bring fresh energy, new ideas, and exciting work that keeps the Show evolving.

For more than 23 years, the NZ Art Show has been about creating opportunities for artists and connecting people with original New Zealand art. That means honouring the artists who have helped build the Show, while also making space for the next generation to join the whānau.

Today’s spotlight reading gave one of our brave readers, Ishmael, the opportunity to share his understanding of the book Pete the Sheep written by @jackie_french_ and illustrated by @whatleybruce . 📚🐑

Come along and join me for some Aussie animal & bowerbird adventures 🐨🪶

Our sessions are thoughtfully designed to nurture a love of books, language, and creativity in young children.

We begin with a familiar welcome song using clap sticks, building rhythm, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
Then we dive into two beautiful picture books by much-loved authors, inviting children into rich storytelling, new vocabulary, and meaningful connections.

We finish with a story-inspired craft experience, where little hands explore ideas from the books through art-making, supporting imagination, fine motor skills, and creative expression.

Each session is a gentle blend of stories, songs, movement, dancing and art, helping children grow as confident listeners, storytellers, and makers… all while being immersed in the magic of exquisite illustrations and the wonder of stories.

Bookings essential- $5 per child either through the Antipodes website or by scanning the QR code.

What we enjoyed about MY MUM’S THE BEST:
* Firstly, how fun are the different animals pairings?! Our Mummy was able to extend our reading experience by talking about the names of the baby animals and their collective nouns.
* Secondly, we also liked listing all the different things mums do for their kids. (It was a lot!)
* Thirdly, board books, such as this one, are sturdy. And with the enthusiasm in which we turn pages, My Mum’s The Best is in quite high rotation, and surviving!
* Finally, an excellent gift for a baby shower or a first Mother’s Day, My Mum’s The Best will tug on all the appropriate heart strings.
