POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Hi Dahlings,

Disability Horror Stories is back this time discussing concert accessibility nightmares.

Ready? Let's go!

Because accessibility isn’t just about getting through the door. It’s about the entire gig.

Ticketing should be straightforward, without unnecessary hoops or repeated proof.

The accessible entrance should actually be available when you arrive, rather than becoming a storage area for equipment.

The route to the viewing area should be accessible and clearly explained.

The accessible viewing area should provide a genuine view of the stage. A wheelchair space tucked behind everyone else, blocked by standing crowds or obstructed by photographers is not equal access. A space on a venue plan does not magically make it accessible.

Then there are the toilets. If the accessible toilet is miles away or difficult to reach, that is a problem.

And accessibility should not stop at standard admission.

Disabled fans deserve access to VIP packages, meet-and-greets, early entry and other concert experiences too. Premium experiences should not become “premium, unless you’re disabled”.

Our Access the Gig evidence shows disabled concert-goers talking about the same barriers again and again: viewing and seating, staff communication, ticketing, mobility equipment, getting around venues, toilets, crowds and VIP access. It also includes positive examples of venues getting it right.

So, venues, promoters and ticketing companies: please stop treating accessibility like an optional extra.

Ask disabled people what works. Train staff. Publish clear information. Make the whole journey accessible — from buying the ticket to getting home.

Disabled people are not asking for special treatment.

We are asking to experience the same concert we paid to attend.

That’s why I created Access the Gig: to collect disabled people’s experiences, highlight the barriers and push for better access across live music.

Have a concert accessibility story to share?

Send it through the Access the Gig link in my bio.

Let’s make accessibility part of the gig, not another battle before it.

I'm a very dedicated small business owner! All going out to my 5 new ambassadors @michaela.and.luna @chronicallylils24 @wheeliechronic @littlebellaroo @bykatie.k it definitely is a full time job though, so that's why I can't wait to have some help with the socials! It really is a team effort, people often ask the massive team at @willorooshop HQ but in reality it's just me! But I do have my incredible PA's who help me pack orders and my wonderful original ambassadors @hannahandherhealth @bethschronicdiaries 🦋❤️‍🔥♿️ @Buttons & Bubbles @buttons_bubs @thelifeofdani2022 - yes that's my best friend Dani who is now under end of life care and please; send her all the love and she will be part of WilloRoo family forever and @runninginflames and Katie too. But ALL of you are part of the WilloRoo family and thank you for continually supporting me, it's tough financially especially going into the autumn/winter (ooh wait till you see the new colours in the beanie hats!) So the more word we can get out the better and hopefully translate to orders! Till then just keep swimming and if you can't swim.. what do we do?? - comment the next line? #roocrew #chronicillness #willoroo #willorooambassadors

Vouchers instead of PIP cash payments won’t work because disability costs are not always neat, predictable or easy to prove.

Cash support gives disabled people flexibility.

Removing support does not remove disability costs.

“You take the right crutch and I’ll take the left and she will just drop like a sack of potatoes.” These words were said to me in a shop today and they have left me angry. The person was joking, but there’s nothing funny about suggesting violence towards a disabled person.

So far my celebrations of Disability Pride Month have been about books (I do like books), but today I am choosing to speak up. I could fill a 100 cards with inappropriate things people have said to me, and compared to many disabled people I’ve had few bad experiences.

Let’s fight back against ableism by celebrating Disability Pride Month. While we’re at it, let’s demand access and respect for everyone!

If you’re new here and would like to follow some truly wonderful accounts by disabled creators, here are just a few of my favourites: @lucywebsterjournalist (anti-ableism campaigner, journalist, author), @wheeliechronic (Disabled advocate and activist), @sophjbutler (storyteller and marathon finisher, helping you understand disability and access), @youlookokaytome (Disability history, art and culture content).

#DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityPride #DisabilityRights #DisabledAndProud Text card: Disability Pride Month is important regardless of whether you have a disability.
