This is not aimed at any one person, but I am TIRED.

Over the last year+, I've been getting more and more AI generated designs, and it has hugely increased the amount of time I spend on admin. Quoting, clarifying and untangling a design that was doesn't work in real life adds up before I even get to sit in front of my sewing machine.

Even the worst sketch you can think of gives me something to work with. In contrast, an AI design usually means recreating the whole thing from scratch once you've already got a picture in your head.

I've noticed that AI designs seem to make it harder for clients to explain what they want. I often receive 2 or more entirely different designs in entirely different styles and the client can't tell me what they want or why they like it. If you can't tell me what you want or why you like one over the other, there's not much I can do for you.

And I'm gonna be real with you, the designs aren't good. LLMs seem to think you have an unlimited budget and that I am some magical gear elf who can make anything into a pair of tights. I'm getting 3D skulls, enormous spikes, SO MUCH TEXTURE and the wonkiest, most complicated (but super generic) logos you've ever seen.

I'm not a Luddite. I am not anti-tech. I have used 3D printers and I do much of my patternmaking digitally and I often laser cut my gear. I even sometimes use AI to render my tech sketches to show a client what it looks like in the fabrics we have picked out. There ARE ways AI can make a passable design. Your sketch and a decent prompt can give a rendering of what it might look like, but that is not what I'm seeing.

If you're not sure where to start, a rough sketch, inspiration and a clear idea of what you like is often more than enough. Hell, I love getting 2K designs! I won't copy someone else's gear but don't underestimate the power of understanding WHAT you like about something and WHY.

And if you're still stuck, there are SO MANY gear designers out there. I have some personal favourites who provide you with everything I need but there are plenty of perfectly serviceable designers too.
