@coalpickdistillery is doing big things.

Every year, one craft distillery steals the show at Kentucky Bourbon Fest, and this time Coal Pick took the crown.

Crafted on the beautiful grounds outside the former town of Paradise, Head Distiller @whiskey_spence is dialing in some incredible pot-distilled liquid:
Wheated Bourbon in Toasted American Oak (New Fill — not double oaked)
KBF Exclusive Toasted Wheated (Double oaked in Cooper’s Select French Oak)

These two single barrels prove just how high the ceiling is for this young distillery.

Stay tuned — there is plenty more to come from Coal Pick.

🥃 6 DAYS TO KBF | THE HOMECOMING POUR × KBF

Day 6 takes us back to Stop 6 of The Homecoming Pour: Coal Pick Distillery in Drakesboro, Kentucky. @coalpickdistillery

While I was there, I caught up with Master Distiller Whitney Spence and asked the question I’ve been asking along the road:

What are you bringing to KBF? 👀🥃

Well… Whitney isn’t giving away ALL the secrets just yet. 😂

But he did give us a little something: Coal Pick is bringing its first-ever barrel-finished release — a single-barrel expression with only about 150–170 bottles available.

What’s the finish?

That part is still a secret. 🤫

Looks like we’ll have to get to Bardstown to find out.

The Homecoming Pour — Stop Six: Coal Pick Distillery. 🥃 @coalpickdistillery

When I tell you Coal Pick was an experience… I mean it.

On more than 4,000 acres in Drakesboro, Kentucky, Coal Pick Distillery sits on land tied deeply to Muhlenberg County coal country.

I spent the day with Master Distiller Whitney Spence @whiskey_spence
and Sydney @sydshrews from the Coal Pick team, and they took me everywhere — across the property, through the rickhouses, into production, around the lake, past bison and other animals, and over to the grounds where they’re building their new visitor center and additional spaces honoring family legacy and those impacted by cancer.

And yes, thank God I wore cowboy boots. Because baby, this was not a cute little tasting-room-only stop. We were on gravel, former coal mining land, ladders, cookers, stills, rickhouses — all of it.

I even tasted 135-proof white dog straight off the still.

This stop connected bourbon back to land, labor, history, family, and coal country in a way I won’t forget.

I’ll be sharing short clips here, but the full conversation is coming to YouTube — subscribe to The Bourbon Goddess for the deeper Homecoming Pour story.

Toasted barrels can overpower fast.
@coalpickdistillery Coal Pick Toasted Single Barrel one stays in check. 🥃

Caramel leads the sip, followed by toasted oak and light baking spice, with a faint orange peel note before a gently dry, toasted finish. Balanced, not loud.

If toasted bourbon has burned you before, this is worth a save.

🔥 Overall: Toasted oak without losing the bourbon

Nights like this don’t come around often.

We were lucky enough to host Whitney Spence—master distiller of @coalpickdistillery —and his wife @_mrs.spence_ at Daint’s. Not just guests, but part of the story now. Watching him slip behind the bar, bottle in hand, and mark it with his own signature felt like a moment bigger than the room.

It wasn’t about prestige, it was about connection. Whiskey, ink, laughter, and the kind of company you want to linger with long after the glasses run dry.

Flattered? Absolutely. Grateful? Even more so.
