Back in 2002 Chris Stafford introduced me to Bill Heinecke, who introduced me to Neil Jacobs. I was hired to build and open the Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle.

Take Bensley’s hand-sketched renderings and build them in a forgotten corner of the world where Thailand, Burma, and Laos meet in The Golden Triangle. For two years, we sweated through monsoon mud, dodged cobras, and tried to coax luxury out of bamboo and elephant poo.

Neil Jacobs gave me an open runway — enough freedom to make mistakes and enough mentorship to learn from them. Bill Heinecke became both compass and teacher; his advice still echoes in my day-to-day dealings. Bill Bensley and I… we were two overgrown camp counselors building a dream safari for grown-ups, unrestrained by corporate memos or market research. Four Seasons pretty much forgot about us out there — until Condé Nast Traveler called us the #1 hotel in the world. Then they noticed.

We opened with elephants by the river, Wolf Hengst and Neil Jacobs at a makeshift bamboo table for lunch. Later, I taught Isadore Sharp how to ride an elephant. Afterward, he turned to me and said, “I didn’t understand this project until now. But it feels like a Four Seasons.”

We played elephant polo, hosted the King’s Cup, and were a driving force for elephant conservation in Thailand with John Roberts.

Two decades later, the Tented Camp still stands, largely untouched. The people may be new, but the soul is the same. To Bill Heinecke, Bill Bensley, and Neil Jacobs — thank you for trusting a younger version of me to build something so improbable.

Happy 20th Anniversary, Four Seasons Tented Camp.

During the @festivaldecannes there are fabulous events. You see many friends and make new ones. And you have to take the stairwell pic😉
Each look requires fittings, stylists, and hair and makeup experts. Doesn’t everybody look fabulous?
By next year’s festival, my new book will be published and I will return to Cannes. 🎥💃

Happy Birthday Momma! This is one of my favorite pictures of my mom, my grand father (Arnett), my godfather (Dizzy) and our dear friend Wolf Hengst. This was taken in the lounge of the Four Seasons Houston for my grandfathers birthday (1987).

The hotel was a hang out for my mom and the jazz lounge was pretty legendary (as you can see). It’s awesome to see my friend @flashgparks host his music series there now.

Back in the day my mom would tell me stories of a key club that Wolf started while managing the hotel. It was one of the first “influencer” programs that I had ever known about.

The key granted you access to their lounge and a room. My mom has some of the coolest stories and I couldn’t think of a cooler person to have these experiences. Thanks for showing us how it’s done!

Love,

- Shae Baby
