POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s part 3 of birding in the Sherborne Missal! Check out my last two manuscript posts for even more birds in this beautiful 15th century English work.

This missal, a liturgical book containing texts, music, and other instructions to celebrate a Christian Mass throughout the liturgical year, is known to have the most identifiable species of birds in any known European medieval manuscript. Many of the birds are even labeled in the margins, which give us a great look into Middle English vernacular. I wonder if people were birders then too…

Music today is “Quam Pulchra Es” (early 15th c), a piece by John Dunstable (I should say USUALLY credited to Dunstable. Some believe his authorship was doubtful. This work is sometimes credited to Magister Egidius, born about 40 years before Dunstable). Dunstable was an English composer who many consider to be England’s bridge between Medieval and Renaissance musical styles. He would have been a teenager when the Sherborne Missal was completed.

Images of the birds were sourced from the British Library’s digital archives, and edited in Canva. As always, the entire post and caption (research and design included) was created without the use of AI, just my own brain xoxo.

Ever wondered why storks are supposed to deliver babies? 👶🏼🪽

Turns out there’s actually a pretty cool story behind it, involving huge migrations, rooftop nests and some suspiciously well-timed arrivals 👀

After having one of my favourite wildlife encounters ever with this White Stork, it felt like the perfect bird to kick off a new little series…

Welcome to Wild Folklore 🌿

Exploring the stories, myths and legends we’ve built around the wildlife we share this planet with.

And yes… the baby thing finally makes sense 😂

Almost Ready to Fly 🪽

A white stork parent keeping a close eye on its two chicks at Knepp, with both youngsters getting very close to that first big step into the world.

They’ve gone from tiny, helpless chicks to almost fully fledged storks, and it won’t be long before they’re stretching those wings beyond the nest, many migrating off to Africa for the winter.

🐦 Bird fact: White stork chicks spend around two months in the nest before they’re ready to fledge. During that time, both parents work together to feed and protect them, until eventually those enormous wings are ready for their first flights.

A moment I’ll simply never forget 🤍

I went out hoping to catch a glimpse of this incredible White Stork, but I never expected an encounter quite like this 🥺

Genuinely think this might be one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had since I started birding. What an absolute privilege 🥺🤍

Did you catch Isabella Tree's Tweet of the Day with the white stork?

In the penultimate instalment of her six-part series, Isabella celebrates this beloved migratory bird, reintroduced to Sussex after an absence of hundreds of years. Throwing their necks back and clattering their beaks in amorous display they produce one of the most distinctive sounds in the natural world.

Thanks to Hazel Reeves for the audio recording, captured at Knepp.

Catch up on BBC Radio 4. Link in bio.

Tune in tomorrow to hear Isabella Tree's Tweet of the Day, featuring the white stork.

The @whitestorkproject began in 2016, bringing storks back to Britain after an absence of hundreds of years. Now it's hard to imagine Knepp's the landscape without this charismatic bird bill-clattering from the treetops. Beloved across Europe and associated with fertility and good luck, for us the white stork is a sign of rebirth.

Catch the episode on BBC Radio 4, Sunday at 8:58am.
