Instead‎ of‎ working‎ to‎o hard‎ today‎ -‎ difficult‎ to‎ be‎ creative‎ when‎ your‎ head‎ is‎ messed‎ up‎ by‎ the‎ news-‎ I’m‎ reminiscing‎ a‎ bit.‎
⁣
⁣I‎ saw‎ that‎ @rogerschaeli_alpinist is‎ in‎ Sicily‎ new‎ routing,‎ so‎ I‎ was‎ inspired‎ to‎ dig‎ out‎ the‎ Rock‎ and‎ Ice‎ from‎ 2012‎ with‎ an‎ article‎ by‎ @whitneyboland ‎and‎ @andrew_burr about‎ our‎ trip‎ to‎ Sicily‎ and‎ an‎ FA‎ I‎ did‎ with‎ Jonathan Thesenga on‎ the‎ same‎ face‎ as‎ Roger’s.‎
⁣
⁣The‎ cover‎ is‎ Whit‎ on‎ Rolando‎ Larcher‎ et‎ al’s‎ La‎ Banda‎ de‎l Bucho,‎ one‎ of‎ the‎ wildest‎ climbs‎ I’ve‎ ever‎ done.‎ 5‎ pitches,‎ with‎ a‎ completely‎ horizontal‎ and‎ literally‎ bottomless‎ journey‎ through‎ a‎ forest‎ of‎ creaky‎ danglers.‎
⁣
⁣I‎ chuckle‎ reading‎ so‎ many‎ parts‎ of the article and‎ thinking‎ of‎ the‎ fun‎ we‎ had:‎ our‎ little‎ cat‎ pet‎ that‎ adopted‎ us,‎ rooming‎ with‎ Whit‎ and‎ a‎ crazy‎ nightmare‎ she‎ had‎ that‎ flopped‎ her‎ out‎ of‎ her‎ bed‎ screaming,‎ nightly‎ feasts‎ lovingly‎ prepared‎ by‎ @brittany_griffith ,‎ me‎ accidentally‎ smacking‎ a‎ very‎ proper‎ and‎ dour‎ Sicilian‎ man‎ in‎ the‎ face‎ while‎ gesticulating‎ a‎ story‎ at‎ the‎ bar.‎ After apologizing profusely in several languages except Italian, we half joked after he left about a blood feud I might have started with the Cosa Nostra.
⁣
⁣Oh,‎ and‎ the‎ climbing‎ and‎ bolting‎ up‎ a‎ giant‎ face‎ by‎ the‎ sea.‎
⁣
⁣Finally,‎ I‎ found‎ the‎ quote‎ in‎ the‎ 3rd‎ slide.‎ How‎ right‎ I‎ was‎ in‎ 2011‎ both‎ for‎ myself and‎ everyone‎ else.‎ For‎ better‎ and‎ worse,‎ I‎ suppose.‎

Andy Salo and Whitney Boland are modern day Gunks legends. @andywsalo has FA’d some of the hardest routes in the area and co-writes the brilliant guidebooks (get them through @wolverinepublishing ). He also LOVES the history - which is easy to see in the guides.

@whitneyboland moved to the area and gained her local status not only through a zip code and crushing rock climbs, but by going deep into the history herself and writing the Flashback series about Gunks legends, which you can find both in Andy’s guidebooks and on the @rockandsnow blog.

In this episode, we discuss the scene and history at The Gunks, what factors contributed to the Gunks being such a powerhouse in the 80’s, the magic of @_linacolina_ and what it’s like to be a short woman in climbing.

Ok, I'll play this throw back. Feats of strength 2011, 2012, 2014, 2022, and 2024. I definitely didn't search very far, I know that better shots exist, but I could only post 10. My climbing photography skills have definitely improved over the years. Thanks at @pjung13 for all of your wonderful setting and organizing these over the years. These comps would not have been successful without you. @movementvalhalla feats of strength. @tristatebouldering #tristateboulderingseries #thecliffscup #cliffscup #thecliffs #thecliffscommunity #bouldering #climbinggyms

Change that angle - the Kilter Board angle adjustment feature is back! This board goes from 10⁰ to 70⁰ overhanging. Indulge your roof climbing whims or climb the board at its tallest, or do both in a single session. Either way, your workout will rock (see what I did there?).

In 1983, after years of climbing on Yosemite’s granite cracks with John Long and the Stonemasters, Lynn Hill went on a roadtrip. First to Arizona, then to Colorado and finally Red Rock, outside of Las Vegas. While on the road, she and Long established some of the most classic routes in the country, and Lynn started to glimpse her own power.

After a brief foray into Hollywood stunts, she traveled to the Gunks to climb for a magazine article and photoshoot.

What happened next is history.

Life lately: all of our free time is spent putting the pieces of @rifleclimbingcenter together! We effectively live there now. We have had the help of some freaking truly amazing individuals in our community and I feel so lucky to have these friends. I can't wait till we get to climb on these sweet boards! Also did I mention we have to move December 1st? It's fine. Totally fine.

Not pictured: so much lifting of heavy (usually awkwardly shaped) things.

Things are happening! Our shipment from @revival_climbing arrived over the weekend and now it's all hands on deck. We're starting the build of the @tensionclimbing Tension 2. Can't wait for the first laps on these awesome boards. Also, sneak peek of the kids play area on the right - gotta keep those monsters contained so we can get our work (or workout) done!
