I find myself reflecting deeply on the life of my beloved grandfather Ramón Almonte, affectionately known as Don Tito, but to me he was my Belo (short for abuelo). He graced this earth for 95 remarkable years. I still can’t believe he’s gone. His absence feels like a silent void, echoing with the countless memories we shared. I feel blessed to have been able to experience him for 36 of those years.
.
My Belo and I had a special bond, one that was woven with laughter, stories, Remy Martin & Johnny Walker shots, and most of all - our shared, deep-rooted love for the New York Yankees. Sitting in his favorite chair, the Yankees game on TV, his eyes glued to the screen, judging every play and knowing each player by their designated number. Those moments, watching the game together or the many times we’d be on the phone equally complaining about a bad pitching performance, a late managerial call, or a multi-home run game (Juan Soto’s was the most recent) weren’t just about baseball—they were about our connection, joy, & the magic of sharing something we both loved so dearly and deeply.
.
He lived a long, beautiful life, filled with wisdom, kindness, hard work, humor, and many, many dances. He always asked where I was headed off to and prayed for my safe return. My grandmother was his greatest love and I find comfort in knowing they’re together once again. My cousins and I share a collective song that ONLY he sang to each and every one of us in our toddler years. I can hear his voice when I think of it. His stories, his jokes, his nicknames for any & everyone, his gentle guidance, his unwavering support and his ruthlessness shaped & contributed to who I am today.
.
As I sit here, thinking about him, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for every second we spent together. I hope he knows just how much he meant to me and how profoundly he influenced my life. Our family is his greatest legacy and I am proud to be his granddaughter. I’ll hold onto our memories tightly, cherishing them like precious gems. Every time I watch the Yankees play, I’ll feel his presence beside me, cheering along with me.
.
‘Cion Belo. I will miss you more than words can ever express.

happy thirty-fine to me ✨🎂 another year around the Sun, or so they say. this past year - as I predicted - was a supremely transitional one. i’ve come face to face with challenges, insecurities, stressors, heartbreak, & pain points while being terrified of these vulnerabilities. lately i’ve actively been working on overcoming those things with a shift of my perspective. realizing i owed it to myself to focus on my triumphs, my blessings, my abundance, my gratitude, my empowerment, my health, my spirituality, my connections & my relationships, and i have so many people to thank because so many people have poured into me when i needed it most: my family, my best friends, my mentors. & i love them truly, madly, deeply. i stand today because they propped me up yesterday & beyond. this birthday was one of the best ones of my life and i owe it completely to them. Because my truth is that it’s not another year around the sun now that i realize I AM THE SUN. 🌞
