Peter Siddle’s journey was never about glamour or natural gifts. It was about grit, discipline and an extraordinary willingness to outwork everyone around him. Originally from Gippsland, Victoria as a competitive woodchopper before he became an international cricketer.

Peter Siddle made his Test debut against India in Mohali in 2008, announcing his arrival by dismissing Sachin Tendulkar for his maiden Test wicket. His first delivery in Test cricket struck Gautam Gambhir on the helmet. Siddle had arrived, and he wasn’t going to be intimidated by anyone.

Siddle didn’t rely on express pace or mystery. His weapons were relentless accuracy, awkward bounce, subtle seam movement and an engine that simply refused to quit. He could bowl long, punishing spells, keep attacking the stumps and return for another over as though he had barely broken a sweat. His exceptional fitness, marathon running and commitment to a vegan diet became part of his identity.

Then came November 25, 2010. His 26th birthday at The Gabba during the Ashes.

Siddle produced a moment that would define his career, claiming a hat-trick against England by dismissing Alastair Cook, Matt Prior and Stuart Broad in consecutive deliveries. He became the first Australian since Shane Warne in 1994 to take an Ashes hat-trick and the first man to take a Test hat-trick on his birthday.

Behind that unforgettable moment was a career built on consistency and sacrifice. 67 Tests. 221 wickets. 8 five-wicket hauls.

Siddle was never the loudest name in Australia’s legendary pace-bowling tradition. But he was the bowler captains could turn to when the pitch offered little, the spells grew longer and the opposition refused to crack.

He wasn’t always the fastest. He didn’t need to be. He had heart, stamina and an unrelenting desire to compete.

@petersiddle403 was proof that sometimes, the most valuable weapon a fast bowler can possess is the refusal to give up

New Zealand were cruising towards a target of 286, powered by Nathan Astle’s magnificent 119 and Stephen Fleming’s 60. With 23 runs needed from 42 balls, the old ball was about to become Wasim Akram’s greatest weapon.

What followed was a breathtaking demonstration of reverse swing. The ball began tailing viciously late, leaving batters struggling to read its movement. Wasim Akram gave away just four runs across two overs during this spell, dragging Pakistan back into a contest that appeared all but over.

New Zealand eventually crossed the line at 290/6 in 48.1 overs, winning by four wickets. But the result couldn't take away the brilliance of Wasim Akram’s spell, a reminder of why he remains one of the greatest exponents of reverse swing the game has ever seen

From the dusty grounds of Sahaspur to dismantling world-class batting line-ups under the brightest lights, Mohammed Shami’s story is one of grit, relentless hard work, and pure bowling artistry.

Mohammed Shami made his ODI debut against Pakistan in January 2013, bowling four consecutive maiden overs. The most by an Indian bowler on ODI debut at the time and that was just the beginning.

Over the years, Mohammed Shami became renowned for his exceptional seam presentation, relentless accuracy, and ability to make the ball move late. Whether it’s reverse swing in Test cricket, a perfectly pitched delivery sending the stumps cartwheeling, or the occasional slog-swept six with the bat, Shami has always found a way to leave his mark.

James Anderson’s iconic spell to Kraigg Brathwaite at Grenada, 2015 was an absolute masterclass to swing bowling that people still talk about years later.

During the 2015 tour of Grenada, James Anderson put on a clinic of swing bowling. After testing Kraigg Brathwaite with a series of probing outswingers, James Anderson dialed up his trademark banana swing. Anderson produced a delivery from wide of the crease that started outside off and jagged viciously back into the right-hander, beating his defence and crashing into leg stump. Brathwaite could only watch as the ball curved late into the stumps. It was a timeless reminder of why he’s a red-ball maestro.

It was the perfect combination of control, movement and deception from England’s greatest swing bowler.

Here’s to when @jimmya9 nipped Kraigg Brathwaite through the gate 🔥

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan was one of Indian cricket’s most intriguing young talents of the 1980s. A wrist-spinner with sharp turn and plenty of variation, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1983, aged just 17.

Siva’s breakthrough came in the 1984–85 season. Against England, he produced a sensational 12-wicket match haul in Mumbai, including 6/64 in the first innings, helping India to victory. He finished his short Test career with 26 wickets in 9 Tests, including three five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket match.

He also represented India in 16 ODIs, taking 15 wickets, and was part of the Indian squad that won the 1985 World Championship of Cricket in Australia.
But his international career faded almost as quickly as it had begun. His final Test came in Australia in 1986, and although he returned to India's squad for the 1987 World Cup, he played only two matches.

A career that promised so much, ended far too soon.

One of India's forgotten gems @sivaramakrishnanlaxman 💪🏻

Long before the world looked for flashy power-hitters, Indian cricket found its silent guardian behind the stumps. In an era dominated by modern giants, Wriddhiman Saha was the ultimate technician. He was a man who made the hardest catches look routine and turned wicketkeeping into an absolute art form.

From grinding through domestic cricket for years waiting for his chance, to stepping into the massive shoes of MS Dhoni in Test cricket, Wriddhiman Saha’s story isn’t about instant stardom. It’s about iron-willed resilience, unmatched glovework, and putting his body on the line for the team, playing through injuries and taking blows just to save extra runs.

When the ball was spinning sharply or seaming unpredictably, you didn’t worry, because Wriddhiman had it covered. A true warrior of Indian Test cricket.

Dale Steyn's opening spell in Johannesburg in 2013 remains a masterclass in ODI intimidation. Armed with searing pace, steep bounce and late movement, Steyn had India's opener Rohit Sharma who was fresh off his historic 209 against Australia completely locked down.

For 15 consecutive deliveries, Rohit couldn't score. Steyn kept beating the bat, forcing defensive pokes at thin air, reducing one of the game's most fluent stroke-makers to pure survival mode.

When Rohit Sharma finally got bat on ball to defend the 16th delivery, the Johannesburg crowd erupted into ironic cheers.
Steyn didn't get Rohit's wicket that day but those 15 balls were a reminder of just how terrifying Dale Steyn could be at his peak.

If the next generation ever asks you how good Dale Steyn was, show them this spell.

Tillakaratne Dilshan started as a middle order batter, kept wickets for a period, bowled handy off spin and boy he fielded like a cat at backward point. Then one day he moved up to open the batting and became one of the most destructive openers the game has ever seen.

Swiss Army Knife is truly the only way to describe him.
Dilshan’s early international career was anything but straightforward as he fought for his place in a Sri Lankan side overflowing with talent. But everything changed when he was given the chance to open.

Then came 2009. He unveiled the Dilscoop. That audacious flick over his head and the wicketkeeper and suddenly bowlers had another problem to solve. The shot became so synonymous with him that cricket simply called it the Dilscoop.

At the 2009 T20 World Cup, Dilshan was the tournament’s leading run-scorer, smashing 317 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 144.74. He was named Player of the Tournament and won the ICC T20I Performance of the Year for his unforgettable 96* off 57 against West Indies in the semi-final. At the 2011 World Cup, Dilshan scored 500 runs in nine matches, the most in the tournament including 144 against Zimbabwe and an unbeaten 108 against England.

87 Tests. 5,492 Test runs. 330 ODIs. 10,290 ODI runs. 1,889 T20I runs and 106 ODI wickets. He was one of only 11 players at the time to score an international century in all three formats. He also topped the ICC ODI all-rounder rankings in 2015. He played in two World Cup finals, won the 2014 T20 World Cup and captained Sri Lanka in all three formats.
A middle-order batter who became an opener. A batter who bowled. A keeper who became an elite fielder and a captain who could change a game with bat, ball or brilliance in the field.

Ajantha Mendis burst onto the international scene in 2008. Not quite an off-spinner, not quite a leggie. A carrom ball that he flicked from his middle finger, a googly, a topspin, a flipper and deliveries that went straight and fast through the arm. Nobody knew what was coming. Sometimes not even his own teammates in the nets.

The moment that announced him to the world came in the 2008 Asia Cup final against India. Mendis produced a stunning 6/13, helping Sri Lanka win by 100 runs, and finished the tournament with 17 wickets.

Then came his Test debut against India. He took 8/132, before finishing the three-match series with 26 wickets, a record for a three-Test debut series at the time.

Ajantha Mendis became the fastest bowler to 50 ODI wickets, reaching the mark in just 19 matches. In T20Is, he remains the only bowler to have taken two six-wicket hauls, including the record figures of 6/8 against Zimbabwe in 2012.

But eventually cricket caught up. Video analysis cracked the mystery and the carrom ball that had broken the world's best batters slowly became readable. Just as quickly Ajantha Mendis had arrived, he faded.

70 Test wickets, 152 ODI wickets and 66 T20I wickets as Ajantha Mendis retired in 2019 quietly. He is now on Sri Lanka's national selection committee and still shaping the next generation of spinners.

For a brief, brilliant, unrepeatable moment, nobody in cricket had any answer.

Virat Kohli 133 vs Sri Lanka, Hobart, February 28, 2012. India had just been battered and whitewashed 4-0 in the Test series. A team that had arrived in Australia as the number one Test side but were leaving with their reputation in pieces. The Commonwealth Bank Series was the last chance at something. Anything.

Sri Lanka posted 320/4 with Dilshan 160 not out and Sangakkara 105. A total that felt like a full stop on India's tour. And then the equation got worse. India needed 321 in 40 overs to gain a bonus point or they were going home.
Sehwag gave a fiery start but with both Sehwag and Sachin gone early, India were rocked back at 86 for 2.

As Virat Kohli walked in, what followed was one of the greatest ODI innings ever played. He didn't just chase, he calculated it to precision. Calculating early, accelerating perfectly, taking Malinga to the cleaners when it mattered most. One over from Malinga went for 24 runs. The best death bowler on the planet was helpless.

A career defining 133 not out off 86 balls with 16 fours, 2 sixes as India reached 321 in just 36.4 overs.

Sourav Ganguly later said that innings will always remain the greatest chasing performance he ever saw. ESPNcricinfo fans voted it the greatest ODI century Virat Kohli ever scored, beating every other hundred across his entire career. It wasn't just a century but the proper arrival of Virat Kohli.

That night in Hobart, a nickname was earned forever. The Chase Master @virat.kohli ❤️
