Not every black bird is actually a blackbird. Ravens, crows, grackles, and the Red-winged Blackbird belong to different groups, each with its own remarkable behaviors and adaptations. Red Winged Black birds can be so beautiful. 🐦‍⬛❤️🖤

🦉 Barred Owl update - BAOW-01

We’re excited to share some updates about the @wildbirdresearch Barred Owl project!

On 10/6 we caught our first Barred Owl (Strix varia, BAOW), BAOW-01, as part of a study to better understand the species’ habitat selection and movements in the NJ Pinelands, a data-deficient part of their range.

BAOWs are a Threatened species in NJ, and very little is known about their space and habitat requirements in the state, including in the Pinelands. To better understand this, we are fitting individuals with GPS transmitters that record both nocturnal and diurnal points to explore their home range, habitat selection, and movement.

We determined BAOW-01 is an after second year (at least 3-year-old) male with the help of Jamie Acker who bands BAOW in WA. We’ve been tracking BAOW-01 daily, and this is what his points reveal so far:

BAOW-01 has been an active bird! He has moved over a mile each night and has used a variety of wetland and upland habitats, including pitch pine uplands, pitch pine lowlands, mixed pine-oak forest, red maple swamp, and Atlantic White Cedar swamp.

There’s still much to learn about BAOW-01, and we’re excited to see where he goes next. Stay tuned for updates!

All birds were handled with proper permits and training.

We captured BAOW-01 on 10/06 at 10:25 PM.

BAOW have distinctive facial disks and nearly black eyes.

So far, BAOW-01 has not been easy to spot or or photograph!

The locations and habitats used by BAOW-01 from 10/7-10/10.

The specific habitats used by BAOW-01 from 10/7-10-10.

BAOW-01 has used habitats like this red maple swamp…

And this Atlantic white cedar swamp. Where will he go next?

With all the storms this weekend expect misplaced birds all over the country. Look for birds you've never seen and are less likely to visit your region. It's Happening World Migration will hit different this year.

NOT ALL MY FAVORITES HAVE TALONS! 🦅🔥
I've traveled extensively throughout the American West, exploring countless landscapes, documenting wildlife, and spending thousands of hours behind the lens.
Raptors have always been my passion, but somewhere along the journey, four extraordinary birds earned a special place in my photography collection.
🐦 Northern Red Bishop, A spectacular flash of red and black that demands your attention.
💛 Yellow Warbler, A tiny burst of sunshine with a voice much bigger than its size.
🦆 Wood Duck, Living proof that nature might just be the greatest artist of all time.
💙 Woodhouse's Scrub Jay, Bold, intelligent, and full of personality.
Four different species. Four completely different personalities. Each one unforgettable.
Now here's where YOU come in! 👇
If you could only photograph ONE of these birds, which would you choose?
🔥 1 Northern Red Bishop 💛 2 Yellow Warbler 🦆 3 Wood Duck 💙 4 Woodhouse's Scrub Jay
DROP YOUR NUMBER BELOW! ⬇️
And here's the real question...
Can any of these four compete with the beauty of a raptor? 👀

Here is a Eurasian Griffon with the epic Pyrenees mountains as a backdrop. Despite these birds being extremely common in this area, much like the turkey or black vulture in the lower 48, these guys are very common. However I found them to be far more fascinating as they are much larger and they rock a fuzzy turtle neck.

I need to post more, especially considering I have so much from Europe still and am now on the other side of the country with hundreds of photos I haven't even begun to edit 🙃

I've decided to no longer use any identification apps and stick with @natgeo Field Guide to the BIRDS of the United States and Canada 8th edition written by @tedfloydbirds which helped me Identify this #LIFER while in Alaska this summer. I felt like I was cheating myself of learning more about these amazing birds and others. Let me know your thoughts on this Black Capped Chickadee singing Stevie Wonder's Ribbon in the Sky.🎶

Standing bold against the rolling landscapes of Saswad, this magnificent rock bush quail commands attention. 📸

Caught in a moment of pure wildlife elegance, this shot captures the striking, intricate zebra-like patterns and fiery crest of one of Maharashtra’s hidden avian gems.
