Happy Tall Tree T(h)ursday🌲 and welcome back to #backpackingadventures four augusts ago 🏕️🎒

Today I’d like to talk a little bit about trees and tent safety ⛺️

As I mentioned yesterday, a condensed itinerary meant we were hiking double mileage to this lake on Saturday, so we were more exhausted than usual when we arrived 😴

We immediately dipped our spent legs in the icy snowmelt waters and somewhat haphazardly set up camp before making dinner. And that meant we didn’t pay close enough attention to widowmakers 🪾

Widowmakers are dead trees that are still standing, and they’re highly susceptible to being blown down by heavy winds. If you’re sleeping too closely to one, it could blow down and crush you.

When I look back at my photos from this stunning camp, my awe is always paired with an overwhelming sense of how lucky we got that none of these widowmakers we camped under blew down overnight.

Don’t be like us—be #widowmaker aware! 🪾
