boston,,, we’ve had a wonderful few years here and cannot thank u all enough for giving us such a loving home to learn so much about ourselves and create so many memories. after this weekend, we’ll be making a big life step and moving to sunny Los Angeles (west coast bands - yes we would love to hop on that bill you have an open spot on 👀). we’re gonna miss the east coast very much, but we’re looking at passing back through very soon.

I recently submitted one of my songs to a music critic who hosts livestreams and listens to up and coming artists. They liked it, which felt cool. The one reservation they had was that it “felt a bit too happy”. It was just one opinion and tbh I took it as more of a compliment than anything else. But it did get me thinking.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
‘Happy’ wouldn’t be the first, second, or third word I’d use to describe my music. I’m not some natural Beaver Cleaver. My first project is filled with paranoia, feelings of being isolated in a crowded city, the journey of trying to navigate my mental and my early 20s. My 2nd project has the word grief in the title haha. I don’t really need to say more about that. Even still, many people have told me that my music has a lightness to it.⠀

I’m just thinking out loud, but maybe what that person labeled as happy was just hope. I constantly put real life into my songs because everything feels urgent to me. I don’t know what that is. It feels like I’m doing a disservice to you all and to myself if I don’t attempt to share my most boiled down truth - including the ugly stuff. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
That said, I also make sure that a thread of hope runs through every song I write. That’s crucial to who and what Maeko is. Even in the moments I felt close to hopeless, I could sense there was a small glimmer of hope. The idea of someone who is struggling hearing my music and walking away from the experience feeling LESS hope doesn’t sit right with me. So there’s gotta be hope. Always. That’s just the way it goes. Hope this made sense, ha 😶‍🌫️⠀
