Do not buy a retic at a convention because they’re pretty. Do your research thoroughly beforehand. This is a solid 12+ feet worth of snake that is 99% of the time a huge loverboy //because I made him that way//. The other 1% is instinct, which can mean battle or breeding modes. I take zero offense to this behavior shift. It’s fascinating to witness, but it is dangerous nonetheless if you are not prepared to handle it.
Necking a snake is a last resort method and should still be done with great care and with the minimum amount of force needed.

Please feel free to try this with any retic you see; also Tide Pods are edible!
Sincerely hope sub 100 IQ folks do this, we don’t need you camping in the passing lane anymore, nor procreating.

And with this I officially add Sulawesi to my Reticulated Python locality collection. Shoutout to Weston Wenner @wildfire_retics for making some of the most amazing animals on this planet.

If you want to keep a reticulated python, you gotta be prepared for their size potential. Preparation means making sure your baby shoestring isn’t rewarded for bad behavior; don’t put your snakelet away if it bites or musks, handle through it. Choice-based handling is nonsense. What you don’t want is a giant snake that’s in charge.
Next, preparation means making sure you can afford the cage upgrades they’ll need. My boy started in a large tub with a heat mat, and now he’s in a 8x2x2… and he’ll graduate from that cage soon. His current cage was $800, and that was a deal. His final cage will likely be $2,000+.
Lastly, preparation includes taking them out of that cage for exercise and cleanings. 100-200lbs on a barbell DOES NOT equate to 100-200lbs of living snake.
This is Diamond, one of Weston’s most docile retics. She contrasts starkly with her neighbor Jörmungandr (whom I call Auntie Jo, my snake’s aunt). Jo and her brother Ragnarok (Q’s dad) are fast, incredibly intelligent, and scary strong. Docile or squirmy, these animals require a very high strength level from their keepers just for basic handling.
The world needs more retic keepers. These animals are misunderstood and have an unfair reputation from when most available animals were wild caught. I wholeheartedly believe them to be designed to be human companions. They’re confident, smart, curious, soft as cashmere, and absolutely stunning no matter what morph (colorway) you pick, especially the “normal” or “wild type” pattern.
If you’re considering becoming a retic keeper, or want more confidence in handling your retics, a personal trainer can help get you in wrangling shape.
