Fire has been part of these landscapes for generations. I was glad to join my friend at Kestrel Prescribed Fire Solutions for a nine-acre burn across land with both native and invasive species.

Prescribed fire is one way we can care for these places now and help pass them along to the next generation.

Old things • Wild places • & the life in between.

Stop squirreling around and just let it rip. Hard-cider braised grey squirrel with chicken mushroom, cinibar red chanterelle, and freshly harvested shitake mushrooms. Some herbs and onion from the garden and its a winner!

Duck thigh (Mallard) Ramen. You have no idea what you are missing. A solid freezer pull for a rainy day.

Just elevated my mushroom game. Sparassis cabbage gratin! OUT OF THIS WORLD! 🤯

Habitat loss is still happening, and that makes the habitat we have left more important than ever. Across the country, state and federal land managers are being asked to do more with less—limited budgets, reduced staffing, aging infrastructure, and thousands of acres to manage. If we want a strong future for ducks and waterfowl hunting, protecting habitat is only part of the equation. We have to manage the habitat we currently have to its highest potential, getting the most out of every acre and giving the people responsible for these properties the tools and resources they need to succeed. The acres we have today matter, and how we manage them will help determine the future of waterfowl for generations to come. COMING SOON — ADVANCED WATER MANAGEMENT

Advanced Water Management gives managers a simple way to track, visualize, and understand water levels across their property.

Quick staff-gauge readings are tied directly to individual wetland units and automatically plotted on a graph, creating a clear visual history of water-level changes throughout the season.

Over time, managers can look back at those graphs to see exactly how each unit responded to flooding, drawdowns, rainfall, and other management decisions.
