Rhino monitoring can't happen without vehicles. @fordsouthafrica has provided BRREP with Ford Rangers for many years, that have proven themselves on the open roads and in the field.

Recently, a BRREP Ford Ranger spent two weeks in the harsh environment of the Central Kalahari in Botswana, covering nearly 1000kms to monitor newly released rhinos.

A massive thank you to Ford, for providing us with such reliable and tough vehicles so we can get the job done.

After 40 hours in a transport crate, this rhino couldn't quite believe she could step out into a boma (holding pen).

All rhinos transported from South Africa to Botswana went through a habituation process for two months prior to travel. This significantly decreased travel stress and rhinos were regularly offered food and water on the journey.

There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, that makes me happier than spotting wild dogs on safari. 🐾

Finding a (grey) needle in a 45,000ha haystack. Post-release monitoring is vital to a successful black rhino translocation. A huge thank you to Hector Medina (@rdlodeizen) for the drone support in Botswana, helping the team find our grey needles after release.

The team found it most efficient to get a bearing through the rhino's VHF tracking device and send the drone along the bearing. @wildlife_act 's @anel0_wildlife was extremely accurate with her bearings often no more than 2 to 5 degrees off the actual line to the rhino.

3) Rhino monitors checking drone images
4) It's not all serious all the time!

Sometimes, all we need to do is stop, observe, and show respect. In a world that never slows down, these encounters remind us that nature doesn’t need us to be extraordinary. We are the ones who need nature. 🦏🌍

Black rhinos like padkos (snacks for the road) too! The rhinos that were recently transported to Botswana got sweet potatoes and carrots as treats, alongside water and lucerne hay. Ndlovu, pictured in the video, already had his fair share of snacks and saved the two sweet potatoes for later.

Don't be fooled though, while they behaved nicely in the transport crates and ate snacks out of the team's hands, they are still wild rhino!

Incoming! The proverbial rhino is out of the bag: BRREP recently completed a historic translocation of black rhinos from South Africa to Botswana. After two months of quarantine, a 36 hour road trip and a few days adjusting in bomas in Botswana, the rhinos have been released and settling into their new home. This translocation has doubled Botswana's black rhino population.

EXCITING NEWS: The Terres International Film and Tourism Festival begins tomorrow, and three of our films are finalists for this event in Spain.

On the 16th September, our short film ‘SpOILed’, produced with and for WILDTRUST, as well as our production with Babanango Game Reserve titled ‘Conserving a Species: One Rhino at a Time’, are two of the three films chosen to screen at their “Three cinematic perspectives on nature” session on 16 September.

Foxes Safari Camps will be presenting the short film ‘Foxes’ Farms’, which highlights their circular economy model, and speaking on their sustainable tourism efforts on 17 September, as part of the Terres LAB – Audiovisual & Travel Hub event. Foxes short film ‘Stanley’s Kopje’ has also been selected as a finalist in the film festival.

We are incredibly proud of the work our partners do, and honoured to have it recognised on a global level.

Stay tuned for updates, and find out more about the festival via their website.

When wildlife crime is part of your daily reality, knowing what to do when you arrive at a crime scene matters.

Tavish, a Vulture Officer with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, recently joined our 1-Week Wildlife Forensics & Crime Scene Management Course, made possible through sponsorship from his organisation.

As part of his work, Tavish unfortunately encounters wildlife-related crime scenes as part of his day-to-day activities. After completing the course, he says he now feels more confident in knowing how to respond correctly, efficiently, and forensically as a first responder.

His hope? That applying these skills in the field will contribute to more successful investigations and prosecutions of wildlife crime in the future.

Thank you to Wildlife ACT for recognising the value of this training and investing in the skills of their team - and thank you, Tavish, for sharing your experience with us 🦅

If you work in wildlife conservation, veterinary science, law enforcement, environmental protection, or wildlife crime investigation, Tavish has a message for you: come and learn with us.
