LAST CHANCE! SIGN UP TODAY…JUST A FEW SPOTS LEFT to join Jared Rosenbaum and NPSNJ

Field Clues to Land Use History – Guided Walk with Jared Rosenbaum
October 15 @ 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

Why is there so much native plant diversity in one place. and so many weeds in another? Understanding land use history is crucial to understanding the composition of natural areas.

Land uses such as crop farming, logging, and grazing have a huge effect on the plant species we find in wild areas today. Sometimes the presence of native plants or weeds communicates as much about recent history as it does about “natural” conditions like soils or aspect.

How can we decipher clues to prior land use in the field? Join Jared Rosenbaum, Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner at Wild Ridge Plants, on a gentle walk where we’ll interpret everything from the trees to the rocks as clues to prior and present land use influences on native plant composition and diversity.

The walk will start at Wild Ridge Plants and will largely be on a paved road. Email programs@npsnj.org with questions.

Go to NPSNJ.org/events to sign up or click link in our story.

Life came full circle when ABC No Rio wrote us to see if @wildridgeplants would custom grow native plants for the green roof on their new building.

We both hung out at ABC in our teens. Like every Saturday. For me, the community and the music are one of the best sets of memories I have.

We grew a mix of native plants for both full sun and also for the shady conditions under the solar panels, based on wild plant communities of rocky ridgelines as well as deep forests.

Locally native species from black cohosh and foamflower to pearly everlasting and wild columbine are all part of the palette of species we’ve been growing out, all plants we propagated ourselves from local wild seeds.

We can’t wait to get planting with the green roof collective! Big thanks to Rudi @freebeertomoro for reaching out to me this spring!

So looking forward to seeing some familiar faces from way back when.

We are thrilled to announce Season 4 of @thewildstory_podcast by @nativeplantsocietynj
with fresh conversations featuring inspiring guest poets, native plant specialists, and leading voices in conservation. Plus, get ready for another season of Ask Randi with Randi Eckel, entomologist and owner of @toadshade_wildflower_farm sharing her expert insights and practical advice about native plants.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude, not only for this incredible year’s roster, but for every single guest who has joined us for deep-rooted conversations about nature, native plants and wildlife. Each discussion reminds us why we started this journey.

Thank you to our listeners who support our podcast and for the amazing work of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey and its mission to promote the appreciation, protection, and study of New Jersey’s native flora.

We believe in this volunteer effort, sharing knowledge, and bringing people together around something meaningful.

With deepest gratitude,
@kimcorrero and @annwallace409

The Wildstory returns after a longer summer hiatus than we had planned. In May, Ann’s father Vern Wallace suffered a devastating stroke and Ann was in Massachusetts for several weeks helping with his care. Sadly, he passed away in late June, just shy of his 90th birthday and of her parents’ 70th anniversary.

In this month’s episode of The WildStory podcast by @nativeplantsocietynj

@gabrielle_myers joins us as our guest poet, speaking with @annwallace409 about her new collection: Go Forth, Lose Yourself into Life, from Finishing Line Press.

Dr. Randi Eckel of @toadshade_wildflower_farm introduces us to the fascinating Eastern Carpenter Bee and why these impressive native pollinators deserve a little more understanding.

Then @kimcorrero catches up with @rachel.mackow.art , co-owner of @wildridgeplants , a nursery dedicated to restoring native plant communities that sustain people and wildlife. Rachel shares the realities of running a native plant nursery, why the location a plant is grown matters, and a lot more.

Ann and Kim close the episode with a long-awaited conversation with Bill Young and Bob Swain, pioneers in restoring some of New Jersey’s most disturbed landscapes—from landfills and Superfund sites to brownfields and mines. They reflect on the early days of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey, their respective years serving as president, and Bob’s remarkable legacy, now honored through the Bob Swain Native Plant Leadership Award. Meet up with Bob and Bill Sept. 24th and 25th at the @serestoration Mid Atlantic Chapter Regional Conference.

Be sure to listen right up to the end of this month’s show. We close with “Plant People FTW,” a new song by @martinebotany and Billy Kelly celebrating all of us who love plants. And don’t skip the ending—the final minute features 25 different lab groups joining in as the Botaneers. Chris Martine, President of the Botanical Society of America, will also be teaching for NPSNJ this fall, so stay tuned for more!

We recently welcomed Jared Rosenbaum, co-owner of @wildridgeplants, to Episode 331 of the podcast for a fascinating conversation about the complexity of ecology—and the way we think about “problems” in nature.

Jared offers a thoughtful critique of the native plant movement, emphasizing the importance of direct experience in natural habitats as a foundation for understanding ecology and informing our gardening practices.

It’s a thought-provoking conversation about ecology, stewardship, and what it means to work with nature rather than trying to control it.

🎙️ Tune in for the full conversation.

Link in bio.

Hosts Tom Knezick and @nativeplantfran connect with Jared Rosenbaum (Co-Owner @wildridgeplants Plants, Author Wild Plant Culture) to discuss connectivity with our natural heritage.

Topics include revisiting the recent @nytimes article about ecologically minded gardening and what it means to the novice and what it means to the professional, how disconnected are we from nature and what is the path back, and places you can look for inspiration.
