What an honor to stand beside Will Allen —a man whose work helped change the way the world thinks about urban agriculture, food, farming, and community.

To stand beside someone whose vision has inspired an entire movement is something so powerful.

But for me, this isn't just a picture.

It's a reminder of why I started Bring Farming Back.

I believe Milwaukee has the land, the people, the talent, and the history to become a national leader in urban agriculture again.

And I believe we have a responsibility to make sure the next generation doesn't just hear stories about what was possible—they get to experience it.

We are not trying to recreate the past. We're building on the legacy and taking it into the future.

I'm incredibly grateful for this moment—and even more determined to keep doing the work.

If you believe in what Milwaukee can become, share this post. Someone in your network may be the person who helps us take the next step.

Let's Bring Farming Back USA!!!!!!🌱

Today, we honor Will Allen @will.allen.farm , a former professional athlete turned urban farming pioneer who transformed how cities grow food and empower communities.

Born in Maryland and raised on a farm, Allen developed a deep connection to agriculture early in life. After playing professional basketball, he eventually settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he purchased a small urban greenhouse and began growing fresh food in the heart of the city.

Allen founded Growing Power, an organization dedicated to urban agriculture, food justice, and youth education. Through innovative composting systems, aquaponics, and intensive growing methods, he demonstrated that fresh, healthy food could be grown sustainably even in dense urban environments. His work trained thousands of young people and farmers, showing how agriculture can build leadership, job skills, and community resilience.

We honor Will Allen for showing that farming is a tool for transformation, growing not just food but opportunity, knowledge, and stronger communities.

We’re back this week paying homage to Black environmentalists who have made indelible strides in conservation, agriculture and climate justice.
Today, we take a look at the life and work of Will Allen, a former professional athlete-turned-agricultural guru who has mentored hundreds of young people on urban farming.
Will, the son of sharecroppers, grew up on a farm in rural Maryland in the 1950s. He found success in both professional basketball, making the 1971 NBA Draft, and in corporate sales, but neither career path fed his soul like farming would.
Will returned to his farming roots in 1993 when he purchased the last remaining registered farm in the City of Milwaukee, founding the preeminent urban farm Growing Power.
Will once said he wanted to become an urban farmer, because “to get good food, you have to grow it yourself.” He instilled that self-sustaining philosophy on urban farming to his hundreds of mentees and staff. His farm became the blueprint for recruitment and mobilization of urban agriculture, leading to dozens of his employees starting urban farming enterprises of their own.
In 2005, Allen was awarded a Ford Foundation leadership grant in honor of his urban farming work. In 2008, he was awarded the MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" for his work on urban farming and sustainable food production. In 2009, the Kellogg Foundation gave Allen a grant to create jobs in urban agriculture.
