September 11, 2001 began as a pretty normal Tuesday.

@elin.arnaudin and I started the morning in Band, which shielded us from much of what happened in those fateful early hours. By the time the second bell rang at 9:40 a.m., Flights 11 and 175 had crashed into the World Trade Center and, a mere three minutes earlier, Flight 77 had hit the Pentagon.

I joined my ride-or-die Jason for Trig with Mrs. Jaisler and class began as usual. Some time between 10:30-11 a.m., my AP Senior English and Yearbook teacher Mrs. Farrar knocked on the door with a camera around her neck and informed the class that the Twin Towers had fallen and that she was taking photos to document the tragedy.

Her words didn't make sense. Fallen? Like, they had structural damage and there had been an accident?

No, planes had flown into them and they had collapsed.

Brevard High School came to a standstill. Classes hit "pause" and students wandered the halls in confusion. Drawn to Mrs. Farrar's classroom, where many of my close sophomore friends --- including Aaron Bland, Will Byers, Mary Reid Lancaster, Dalton Granville III Lilley, Micah Rogers, Anna Averette, Will Selle, Steve Fogleman, and Brittany Thompson --- were huddled, I watched replays on TV as a plane hit the second tower and both buildings fell. It remains as surreal a sight as I've seen.

Within minutes, I had an epiphany that my cousin Gene was a lawyer at the WTC. Though some 20 years my senior, we'd met during a family trip to New Jersey in 1994, a year after the first WTC bombing, which was naturally still fresh on my NYC-area relatives' minds.

I asked for and was granted permission to call my dad on one of the pay phones (!!) in the office lobby to see if he'd heard anything. Indeed, his mother had received word from her sister that Gene just so happened to have had a late call with some Asian clients the night before and wasn't due at the office until later that morning. The timing saved his life.
