Your arm isn’t behind. Your body is.

Every summer we meet the same pitcher. Great feel, clean delivery, works hard, sits 74. The pitching lessons stopped moving the number a year ago. Because the number was never a pitching problem.

The research is clear: body mass is one of the top indicators of throwing velo. A 150 pound frame can only produce so much force, no matter how clean the delivery is.

Yes, there are outliers. There’s always a skinny kid somewhere throwing 90. They tend to get hurt or fizzle out, and even they would benefit from added strength. Output and longevity. But you probably aren’t the outlier. Bet on the rule, not the exception.

• Add lean mass and strength, and the same delivery produces more velo. Nothing about the throw has to change.
• A stronger athlete can produce more force and tolerate more of it. The research ties elbow and forearm injuries directly to strength deficits.
• More of the gap between your 74 and the kid throwing 85 lives in the weight room than you think.

This offseason, stop drilling the throw and start building the thrower.

🎯 PSP Commit Shoutout
‘25 | University of Rochester | Liberty League

Web is one of the most bought-in, dialed-in athletes I’ve ever worked with. He trains with intent day in, day out — no wasted reps, no wasted days.

Since starting at PSP, he’s packed on 30+ lbs of lean mass, added hundreds of pounds to his lifts, bumped his outfield velo up double digits, and now has a 98 MPH exit velo wood bat off a tee.

He’s a worker, plain and simple. Rochester is getting a guy who’s going to keep growing, keep developing, and make an impact right away. Can’t wait to watch him tear it up at the next level.
