So grateful to be able to volunteer as a counselor at the STEM on strip camp! Had so much fun getting to work with all the kids teaching them fencing for the first time, and also collaborating on stem projects together 🫶 @fencersdogood

From day one, STEM on Strip has been about giving kids a chance. By the end of day 1, every single student in this program could suit up in electricals and fence on their own. That’s not nothing — some kids take months, even a year, to get comfortable doing that.

We showed them once. They just... got it. Because that’s all it takes sometimes — one shot, one opportunity.

That’s the whole point of this program. Fencing and STEM, open to every kid, no matter their access, their ability to pay, or anything else standing in the way.

Every kid deserves that chance. We think so, at least — what do you think?

Second to last day of STEM on Strip and somehow it feels like we’ve had these kids way longer than we actually have.😅 So much laughter, some actual learning snuck in there too, and yeah — controlled chaos, but the good kind. One more day left and honestly not ready for it to end.

If you’re part of a fencing club that’s community-minded and thinking about hosting your own STEM on Strip next summer — we’re taking inquiries now. DM us or email theo@fencersdogood.org and let’s talk.

Every day, we get our students on strip and have them fence.

Is their technique perfect? No, far from it! They hop, they miss their targets, they’re not totally sure what they’re doing out there.

But here’s the thing — given how short our program is, the most important part isn’t perfect footwork. It’s getting them on the piste. We want them to actually try this sport, not just sit on the sidelines learning about it.

And at the end of every session, same thing: “This was the best part of the day!”

(Until they get to the STEM portion. Then that’s the best part of the day. Every day these kids have two best parts.)

Many of our students walked into this program hesitantly. They didn’t know anyone. They didn’t even know what fencing was.

But we watched hesitation turn into friendship — sharing ideas, laughing over jokes, figuring things out together: how to get dressed in electrics for fencing, how to solve a problem in their STEM build, how to win the most points for their team in the relay games.

We’re having so much fun watching these strangers become friends. 💕

They think they’re just building a marble run. But what they’re REALLY doing is solving problems, thinking on their feet, figuring out how to work as a team, testing out ideas that don’t work until they find the ones that do, and not giving up when the marble falls off the track for the tenth time.

Today’s STEM on Strip challenge: build a marble run, get judged on longest run time AND aesthetics. (Turns out those two things don’t always go together.)

Huge congrats to Team GOAT for taking the top prize today!

One of the goals behind STEM on Strip is to get kids who’ve never picked up a saber to actually fall in love with fencing.

Today that stopped being a nice idea and became real. Our students got suited up and actually bouted each other. Kids who a few hours earlier didn’t know what a lunge was were fencing each other and grasping the ideas behind the sport.

You could see it click for some of them. We hope that for all of them, fencing becomes a lifelong obsession.

Let’s talk about teamwork for a sec. Fencing is mostly a solo sport. You get used to it being all about you — your training, your results, your bad days.

But STEM on Strip was never that. None of it happens without the people who showed up for it, and who worked behind the scenes to make it happen:

@karmaforcara believed in this before it was even a real thing — they fund youth-led community work through microgrants, and they took a chance on us.

@bostonfencingclub opened their doors, and @nr_sayles Nina Sayles (their Director of Outreach) is honestly the reason this got off the ground. She heard the idea and just said “let’s make it happen.”

@jerrygong.exe runs @lazerrobotics, an award-winning robotics team, on top of building out the entire curriculum that got these kids actually excited about STEM. Not easy stuff to pull off.

Thank you to @usafencing, for believing that a group of kids could build something that didn’t just bring fencing into the community — but actually made that community better.

And to everyone who donated — big or small — thank you. Your support is what turned STEM on Strip from an idea into an actual program.

This exists because a handful of people decided to care about the same thing we did. Thank you, genuinely.
