Named after the traditional Japanese playing cards he learned from his grandmother during family gatherings in Hawaii, Hanafuda is a meditation on memory, family, and cultural inheritance, and the ways these shape our relationship to the natural world.

Organized into twelve suits corresponding to the months of the year, hanafuda cards depict flowers, animals, and landscapes in striking compositions of black, red, and white. Drawing on their imagery, as well as the visual traditions of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, Matsuda creates photographs that he describes as “imperfect translations” of his relationship to Japanese-American culture—a process of exploring his heritage while making space for something new, free from the need to be “correct.”

The photographs move between intimate portraits, quiet observations of the natural world, and landscapes that evoke the passage of time and the persistence of memory. Like the cards themselves, they suggest connections between people, plants, animals, and the changing seasons. Yet their relationship to hanafuda is associative rather than literal, shaped as much by Matsuda’s experiences and memories as by the imagery of the cards.

At the heart of the project is a desire to bridge distances—between generations, between cultures, and between past and present. In Matsuda’s photographs, landscape becomes not simply a setting, but a site of memory, ancestry, and belonging.

Another one for the books 🪨

Earlier this month, we partnered with @madrockclimbing for a community meetup in Central Park, sharing the fundamentals of outdoor bouldering. From spotting and falling to reading routes and climbing etiquette, it was about building confidence on stone and making climbing outdoor feel a little more accessible.

We are excited to announce the upcoming 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺, a public event in collaboration with 𝗔𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 (@aperturefnd). The PhotoWork Symposium is a series of programs featuring the PhotoWork Senior Fellows.

This inaugural program will feature presentations by the 2025 Senior Fellows: 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗮, 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘀𝘂𝗱𝗮, and 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲́ 𝗜𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮 𝗥𝗶𝘇𝗼. Each artist will present the body of work created throughout their fellowship, followed by an intimate discussion on process and practice with their Mentors: 𝗥𝗼𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗲, 𝗥𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀, and 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.

thank you to my friend Will for photographing me for “The New Science of Dreaming”, and for showing me the superrr interesting no camera photography technique, talking about our dreams and life and for creating such a fun headdress :)

I used to lucid dream often, creating and orchestrating long multi part epics in my dreams. Nowadays I maybe lucid dream once or twice a year, or when I have the rare nightmare, my consciousness will pop in to settle things before they get too intense. Do you lucid dream?
