For Art Director Merv Shipenberg, having sexy women saying, ‘R-r-r-russ’ meant turning his handicap stutter into an iconic brand platform for women’s sportswear manufacturer, Russ Togs. “It was my first assignment,” he said, “and at the creative meeting | stuttered on ‘Russ’ and the copywriter stood up and said That’s the campaign!” Altman-Stoller Advertising for Russ Togs Seventeen Magazine August 1965 📸 William Helburn, Photographer Max Stoller, President & Creative Head Jeanne Hart Stoller, Fashion Director & Lead Stylist Merv Shipenberg, Art Director Sandy Brown, Model #altmanstoller #maxstoller #jeannehartstoller #russtogs #60sstyle @house_of_stoller

Making a prop out of type “A very, very tasteful ad, the props, the lighting, and the materials used and the way in which they were used all contribute to this ad's outstanding quality. “Typewise, the ad is so much better than is usually found. The type construction for "jr." this combination of type, art and prop was handled with exquisit taste." AD Lee Batlin of Altman-Stoller dramatized "jr." in 3D lighted letters to emphasize sophistication in client Cuddlecoat Jr.’s high fashion line of junior clothes. Usual connotation of "junior" in fashion—coy or kittenish—had to be illuminated boldly.” — Art Direction Magazine, November 1958 Altman-Stoller Advertising for Cuddlecoat Jr. Mademoiselle 1959 📸 William Helburn, Photographer Max Stoller, President & Creative Head Jeanne Hart Stoller, Fashion Director & Lead Stylist Lee Batlin, Art Director Lois Harmon, Copywriter Sandy Brown, Model #altmanstoller #maxstoller #jeannehartstoller #sandybrown #cuddlecoat @house_of_stoller

From my 60s collection, this is the autograph of the German-born, American supermodel Babette March (aka Babette Beatty outside of modelling). . Born in Berlin and raised between Germany and England, ‘Babette Marie March’ moved to New York in the early 1960s and was signed to Ford Models, where she quickly became one of Eileen Ford’s top earners. Her breakthrough came when she secured the first ever Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover, which made her internationally recognizable overnight and led to major editorial, catalogue, and advertising work throughout the decade. By 1965 she was a fixture of American fashion and advertising and reportedly earning $85,000 a year, placing her among the highest‑paid models in the world… and the rest is herstory! 💐 . 📅 Period: Early to late 1960s . 🪞 Covers: Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Life Magazine (unconfirmed and heavily debated!), Elle France, Woman’s Day, Woman, Look, Ladies’ Home Journal, McCall’s, Seventeen, Glamour, True Story, Mademoiselle as well as Saks, Lord & Taylor and JCPenney catalogue covers + . 🥻 Runway: March is confirmed to have walked for New York ready‑to‑wear shows for major department stores as well as designer showings for Bill Blass (pre‑Blass label), Geoffrey Beene, and Anne Klein as well as seasonal presentations for Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor . 📸 Campaigns: Jantzen Swimwear, White Stag Sportswear, Breck (beauty), Klopman, Dan River, Alamac, Clairol, Dana, Pepsi-Cola, Saks, Mister Pants (you read that right), Lord & Taylor, JCPenney, Montgomery Ward, Nan Dorsey + . Images ⬇️➡️ . 1.     Autograph: Unknown 📸 for Nan Dorsey Separates, c.1964. March is pictured alongside an unknown model, most likely a fellow Ford model (Nan Dorsey used Ford models almost exclusively in their advertising) . More image credits on carousel ➡️➡️➡️ . 2.     Cover: Uncredited 📸 for Ladies Home Journal, September 1964. Unfortunately, LHJ relied heavily on using staff photographers and in-house glam teams and did not publish credits for covers at the time. . 3.     Campaign: Unknown 📸 for Anne Haly for Valley Set, 1969. Featured in US Vogue, September 1969. March (right) is pictured wearing a long-sle
