الإمبراطور الذي لم ينسَ أصله

قبل نحو ١٨٠٠ عام، خرج رجل من مدينة شهبا ليصبح إمبراطوراً للإمبراطورية الرومانية. كان اسمه فيليب العربي، لكن ما يميّز قصته ليس وصوله إلى عرش روما، بل ما فعله بعد ذلك.

فبدلاً من أن ينسى مدينته، أعاد بناءها ووسّعها ومنحها اسمه، لتصبح « فيليبوبوليس ». شُيّدت فيها الشوارع والساحات العامة والحمّامات والمسرح والمعابد والمباني الرسمية، لتصبح واحدة من أبرز مدن المنطقة خلال تلك الفترة.

وبعد ما يقارب ألفي عام، ما تزال شهبا تحتفظ بآثار المشروع الذي أراد فيليب من خلاله أن يضع مدينته على خريطة العالم الروماني.

The Emperor Who Never Forgot His Origins

Nearly 1,800 years ago, a man from the city of Shahba rose to become Emperor of the Roman Empire. His name was Philip the Arab, but what makes his story remarkable is not only his rise to the throne of Rome, but what he chose to do afterwards.

Rather than forgetting his hometown, he expanded and transformed it, giving it his own name: Philippopolis. Streets, public squares, baths, a theatre, temples, and official buildings were constructed, turning it into one of the most prominent cities of the region during that period.

Almost two millennia later, Shahba still preserves the remains of the project through which Philip sought to place his city on the map of the Roman world.
