My new book Danny B is out TODAY! If it’s not in your local bookstore, please ask them why not

It’s been 10 yrs since my last book & I’m just gonna tell you exactly what I’m trying to do here cuz obviously we don’t live in a book-reading world like we once did so I’d rather help explain how to understand it than be coy & hope people pick up on it

The story is over the top & sensationalistic. & It’s very close to the true story as told to me by the main character & it includes all the tabloid thrills: sex, drugs, punk rock, dead bodies, motorcycles. The narrative is sorta 90s noir

But its form is set in direct tension against the adrenaline that thrills like this are most commonly used for in entertainment. There’s a structuralist method to how it’s told, like a Haneke movie or maybe even Robbe-Grillet, like a lot of the action happens in-between the scenes

But the edges are softer than that. I was thinking of it as little puffs that dissipate, like smoke signals; images from dreams you can only half-glimpse in the morning; ancient Chinese poetry like Li Po

Which basically means there’s a lot of white space on the page. & I wouldn’t have been drawn to telling this story in a more conventional form & I wouldn’t have dared to suddenly try my hand at poetry about the mists of rocky waterfalls— It’s the tension between the form & content that interested me

I started work on it in 2014. I can’t guess how many thousands of hrs went into sculpting it since then. It’s sparse, just 23k words, down from I dunno… 8 million?

& Up until the very last proofread, I was pretty sure it sucked & I’d screwed it up. & I dunno how these things happen, but now I think it’s really good, like I really did make the thing that I set out to make

Endless gratitude to @dannybelrose & @featherproof_books

Here’s me & Danny w/ a pizza somewhere in southern OR maybe 2012? & Last time I saw him last yr

Chicagoans join us at @real_rainboclub 10/25. Me & Danny will DJ the Jinx Scene Soundtrack; I’ll read from the book; Danny will answer questions; & @tj.fuller whose new book is also out now on Featherproof will also be reading from his new book

Audiobook & e-book both available soon

RAINER MARIA, CAP’N JAZZ…AND TIME TRAVEL
.
Back in 2003 Austin, @heydrin said “I’m going to see Rainer Maria at Emo’s and you should go.” I couldn’t argue with that logic. I knew nothing of the band, but a few minutes before they started, I got a call from @robertallen1539 and when I said where we were, he said “oh, Rainer Maria are great! You’re in for a really good show.”
.
Of the many bands I’ve seen live, of many genres, few had the impact I felt at that show. This was a musical trio that was tight but not rigid, melodic and warm, with intelligent lyrics and SO MUCH ENERGY. I’ve spent over two decades watching a couple recordings of that tour, and revisiting their music (especially over the last two years), but I thought I would never see them live again.
.
So when I found out, less than 24 hours before the fact, they’d be playing a show in Austin with Cap’n Jazz, I had to mobilize. Adrienne couldn’t join us but Robert came along and we both got to experience a show that, for me, restored me to another, earlier time in the best possible way.
.
This time I knew nothing of the music of Cap’n Jazz but Robert explained they are “the post-punk OGs”. I had such a blast taking in their performance, albeit at a safe distance from crowd surfers and flung tambourines! Pic 10 shows actual perspective - it’s amazing the energy that can be exuded one wall from a still sidewalk!
.
Robert and I were both struck by how young the audience was - the majority of attendees were born AFTER that 2003 show I saw. It reminded me of a conversation I had with @eviritoburrito a couple days before: I love that Sunny Day Real Estate and Bright Eyes are the new “classic rock” for the emerging generation.
.
I am so grateful to @rainermariamusic for last night’s reminder that maybe two decades isn’t so long after all, and to @capnjazzofficial for last night’s reminder that we needn’t take ourselves too damn seriously.

More digging and I found this pretty sweet signed poster for “Catastrophe Keeps Is Together” by @rainermariamusic, which was originally released on Grunion Records in 2006 but reissued on vinyl by @polyvinylrecords in 2018. I have no recollection of how I got this but it’s pretty damn awesome.

I’ve been working on cleaning up my office, and part of that process always means finding random gems like this press photo of @rainermariamusic from @polyvinylrecords, circa I’m guessing around the release of Long Knives Drawn, so 2003.
