Tuesday Morning Paddles with @gowanusdredgers have returned for the 2026 season! 🛶 🌅

So many new scenes out on Gowanus Bay - vessels Pilot and Victory Chimes are now anchored in Henry Street Basin, we paddled around the Peter J. Sharp floating boathouse (formerly of the Harlem River) in Erie Basin, the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal is progressing with big cranes, the green wooden canoe debuted, and we glimpsed the blue highways ferry Phyllis Anne now docked near the foot of 29th street.

Join the Dredgers as a Steward member and come out on Tuesday mornings 7-8 am.

Post cards from the fall and spring field seminars in Maine with @williamsmystic
•
Spring field seminar in Maine: starting on Hurricane Island, learning with our hands and boots on the ground, then moving through Bar Harbor, Portland, and down the rugged Maine coast in the fall. Because here, learning doesn’t stay inside four walls—it moves with the tide.

European Flat Oysters (𝘖𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘴) found in Southern New England

On November 2, 2025, a large, living 𝘖𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘴 was discovered in Stonington Harbor in Connecticut, marking the first verified record of a live European flat oyster in Long Island Sound. This find raises significant research questions, such as how many are there, where are they, and will this species compete with native oysters? How it arrived in Stonington Harbor is also a mystery. Be on the lookout for posters, media alerts, and iNaturalist (an online social network of people sharing biodiversity information) postings that are being deployed to engage the public in order to determine the extent of nascent populations of 𝘖. 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘴 in southern New England. Questions should be directed to Jim Carlton at Williams Mystic or Krystal Rose at Mystic Seaport Museum.

First-year students met up early on Saturday to travel to the @williamsmystic campus and explore how a semester at this program can fit their academic plan. Thanks for sharing photos of your day in Mystic, Dean Walsh!
