Our vision is to see lives transformed by the love of Jesus.

Today, we launched a fresh vision @emmrd; our church joined in song, celebration, prayer, rejoicing. The living God walks with us, redeeming all of our waste places, making all things new.

This fresh vision centers around the Emmaus Rd story; the God who invites us to walk with him in our questions, our doubts, our wrestling and our wonder, drawing us into PRESENCE, the pursuing, faithful, bread-breaking, blessing-given God who offers us INVITATION, the One who is forever calling us home and into BELONGING.

Did not our hearts burn within us?

Of a dozen moments that were most beautiful this morning, here were a few that captured my heart:

All of our staff kids, peeking around a corner with joy, waiting to surprise their friends, part of the service from the 8 AM start til the 2 PM finish,

Reunions with some of our original church elders, in town for birthday celebrations, reminding us to pray, play, obey,

Watching our kids dance their hearts out, believing God that the promise of presence, invitation, belonging is for every generation,

Genuine joy, spilling out in so many conversations with leaders who have been part of our church for almost 14 years and first-time visitors,

Ending the day with team, gathered around pizza, rejoicing that the joy of the Lord is our strength.

What a gift, to enter into the story of the God who redeems all of our rubbish places and promises: I am making all things new.

“One might say that this is the vocation of the church; to take the sadness of the world and give back no anger, the sorrow of the world, and give back no bitterness, the pain of the world, and not sink into self-pity, but to return forgiveness and love, blessing and joy.”
-N.T. Wright

Festivals are woven through the Scripture, the people of God, dwelling in tents, going on pilgrimage. These days are marked by holiness and presence, family and feasting, outrageous absurdity (remember that one time when Jesus was 12 years old and his parents traveled a whole day without him, confident that he was somehow safe?)

It's festival season, and the British church is going on pilgrimage. We have over 500 people from @emmrd heading to @wildfires_festival and celebrate friends heading to:

@focushtb
@newwineengland
@keswickministries
@creationfestuk
+ many others over the weeks ahead. After leading a festival for 10 years, here are my top tips for entering in with joy.

PREPARE YOUR HEART
In the middle of all the camping prep, packing, curveballs, and questions, it's easy to forget to prepare our hearts. Spend a few minutes with the Spirit, asking God to open the conversations and ideas that will bring life.

LOOK FOR GOLD
Festivals can bring out the best and worst. A speaker, a conversation, a text message might distract you. Be wise and discerning, but look for the gold. Hold onto what is grace. Release what is not. Guard your heart from cynicism.

CHOOSE REST
After a long day and endless sessions, sometimes the most holy thing you can do is sit quietly in your tent for a few minutes and process the day with Jesus. Choose rest. These gatherings are endlessly joyful and also can feel endless.

SEEK PRESENCE
What a gift, these moments to be in the presence of the living God, with our wider, diverse, extraordinary church family. In whatever way, you will most be joy to you, seek the presence of Christ for yourself and with others.

Big tops, port-a-loos, sticky sunshine joy to each of us. We are the free people of God. Let's soak in and expect the miraculous.

“So everyone who had returned from captivity lived in these shelters during the festival, and they were all filled with great joy!”
‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭8‬:‭17‬ ‭

I am often bewildered by the fact that I moved to Surrey only 18 months ago. Transplanting takes time and intention. New soil, new roots, new community, new patterns.

Six months into my time here, I told a friend it was taken longer than I expected to form deep relationships. She kindly laughed and reminded me: "It should. Deep relationships take time."

Over the last 18 months, I have been continually in awe of the extraordinary community formed around our church. People love with their whole lives, live with generosity, radiate kindness. The depth and maturity are often astounding.

I recently read a book called From Strength to Strength by Arthur Brooks which highlights importance of lifelong friendships. Whenever it's realistic, I pick up the phone or send a text to these kinds of friends. I miss you. I love you. Thank you for the way your life has shaped mine.

One of the great and unexpected joys of this chapter is the diversity of people in my life. Their role and calling is often international. We see each other less often. We love each other deeply.

So, this summer season, here's to friendships,
Near and far,
Lifelong and new,
Consistent and spontaneous,
Highs and lows,
Transplanted and rooted.

And here are a few of the faces that have made my July brighter than even the sunny weather.
